An eternal question

When listening to trance, what is the single most important element that you look for in a tune? Which part of the song makes it exciting for you? Is it lush pads, rolling thunderous bass lines or powerful kicks that make you want to jump? Or is it beautiful melodies pulsing with sadness that make the song so attractive? Maybe its just the combination of all these that account for a great song?
What do you think guys?

a good strong prodominant melody and a clear and loud kick...
hey cheggy
The build up out of the breakdown. I like emotional energetic buildups that lead into something. I can't stand it when you have this mega build but when it comes in, its weaker than the build.

see...here is a man who knows whats up....its all about the beat. if you don't have a good beat, then you don't have a good song period. there is WAAAAAY to much focus on melody these days...
Mr.Mystery
I would say it has to be EVERYTHING.
If even 1 little element is missing a tune loses most of its power IMO.

A well balanced "mediocre" tune does it to me much more than a killer tune that lacks in some area.

well it depends on your personal preferance.. I'm guessing you like mostly techno/house? I happen to LOVE a good melody.. which is why I produce/listen to mainly trance and classical..

I think it's the synergy of all of the elements. Like Mystery said, one weak part can undercut the whole production.

Yup, it's not with trance alone, but with all music. It's the combination that does it. If you got a killer melody, but the sounds are weak, well it won't be super in the end, same goes for the opposite.

That's what makes the difference between a great tune, and a tune with "potential".

Thanks for all your replies, allways happy to hear what others think.

well...what i meant was that i think that the beat should be the driving force to a track. i like melody too of course, but it should be secondary. when i hear a trancer that has a really boring standard beat and some over the top melody it just isn't as good to me as something that has a really nice driving beat and then a melody that fits well with that...

yes this is true.. it's like a song I heard a while ago by DJ Quicksilver called supernova (I think) but anyway, it had a really good melody but a boring and bass-less kick which made it a boring song.. so I guess they are both as imporant..
