What about those producer/djs who make their stuff in a studio, get it pressed and then play it out on decks.
As for dj's considering themselves artists, unfortunately, most of them do, they believe that they are creating a journey or some crap like that for the listener.
Anyway, enough of this, someone has to play the songs. |

I suppose that's what it comes down to..
Thanks for posting about this Sean and Cheggy.. always wanted to see what other producers thought about DJs doing "mixes" |

| Hehe, I started DJ'ing long before producing, and still only really produce with a dancefloor in mind. But yeah, the DJ as musician argument has been beat to death so many times it's not even funny. |

DJ's have no skill.. deal with it :P I can play songs and match there BPMs too...
this is my opinion but I would honestly love to be proven wrong.. feel free :)
my opinion excludes scratch artists A.K.A. Turntablism, they are not worthy of having the same name as people who make "DJ Sets" - I believe the term Scrath Artists better suits them :P |
Hey bro, scratching is actually quite easy too. I got pretty descent at it over a week or two. And got really good after a month of practice ... it's all about good equipment when you try to scratch that's why it 'seems' difficult if you just have a sucky mixing table. |

yeh but then you have to actually mix it with a beat, and it has to sound even musical or danceable.. that's where it can be hard.. |

| Anyone with 2 hands can do basic scratching, but what's the point of it? It doesn't make the music any better, in fact it just makes it worse IMO. If you're doing good scratching that adds to the music it takes a lot of skill; I personally can't do it so I don't bother with lame attempts. |

haha.. that's true.. I'm not about to listen to someone just scratch :) - scratching is more of a "my nuts are bigger then yours" contest between DJs :D - but it's still cool to watch |

I think the best way to find the answer to that one is to try it for yourself dude. I used to laugh at my brother and say that to him - that it took no skill - when I just played the drums. Once I got into trance and tried it for myself I realised it was a lot harder than it seemed to beatmatch, then get a decent set going on. Just involves knowing your tunes and loving the music.
Amongst the lot of us (my friends) we can all beatmatch but I'd say that my friend Carter is just amazing, I always love listening to him on the decks. It's hard to pinpoint why he's so much better but he just has the skills; always able to pull the right tunes together and build up the people. Hard one.
I love doing both personally and would say they are both great, but there is much more knowledge involved in production, no doubt.
Still, makes me wonder why people consistently rate one trance DJ over another EG Tiesto getting umpteen thousand in one arena just to see him - haven't seen him tho so can't comment, but there must be something about him to get that reaction.
My two cents. |

yes it was agreed apun that people who beatmatch live with decks and turntables have some skill.. but it is a skill that can be mastered in far less time then a producer, yet lots of DJs still consider themselves to be musicians (which is sad)
basement DJs (which have no skill) are you basic "live 2-10-04 @ Home" losers that you see in the DJ forum who think that by putting together 10 songs they didn't make themselves they are putting the listener through a "musical journey" - again, which is very sad..

my 2 cents worth...
Alan: as its been said before this is a tired old argument. Quit your wineing an let people do what they want.
Also for you info a lot of the tracks are taken from live mixes done in a club. And as far as i`m aware there are no computer mixes.
A lot of the poeople on my site are producers, as you know it takes time to produce a track. So i`m hoping soon i`ll have some tracks for the site from them.
Anyway your arguments have bee n good for one thing keeping this post up where it can be seen, so in away you`ve been helping those "loosers" out!!! |
