forgive me, im a noob :)

Right, I see now looking back after a good long rest that I was confused. The notes I put up where the from the A Major scale, which is partly due to the method I was using being so confusing ... long story.

Auujay - cheers for the link, like I say I was seriously stressed this afternoon for various reasons and all my google searches came up with stuff about C minor, which was doing my head in further.

Pitcha - that would be appreciated. Less of the tea boy :)

So my next questions are:

Are the triads I wrote down earlier correct (for A major):

a c# e
b d f#
c# e g#

etc?

And am I right thinking a lot of trance melodies are in A minor?

Cheers all, this post has helped me a lot.

Those triads are correct for A major.

A minor triads would be:

A C E
B D F
C E G , etc...

cheers, glad Im on the right lines :)

Most trance basslines begin on the first note of a minor scale, which indicates the key of the track. I've never heard a trance track in major before.

I have... it sounded terrible.. if your goign to use major make it a happy hardcore track.. that's the only way it works..

wasnt system f - out of the blue in major? I read that somewhere.

Seven Cities is written in the Major scale, and I think Mushroom Therapy is also in Major.

I know there's other good compositions out there in Major scales.

The major scale is exactly the same as another minor one, they just start on a different note.

Bach - Air is in major, but it is still rather melancholy.

thought i would help out a bit with your chords, although, i'm not sure if your asking for this or not

With the minor triad you have the root (a random note, if the chord is A the the root is A), Minor 3rd (3 halfsteps up), and the perfect 5th (7 half steps from root).

The Major Triad is the same thing, except root, major 3rd(4 half steps up from root), and the perfect 5th.

an augmented chord means the perfect 5th becomes an augmented fifth, which means one half step higher.

a diminished chord means the perfect 5th becomes a diminished fifth which means one half step lower...

I think thats right, if its not, someone let me know

Only thing I have to add is about the augmented/diminished chords. I learned that you usually don't go into augmentations/diminishishishishations (yeah I don't know what word to use there) until you hit the 7th note in your chord...making it either an augmented or a diminished 7th.
