Question on recording...

I've got a laptop with some crap integrated soundcard. The other day I recorded the first mix Ive ever attempted. The sound quality is horrible. I used Soundforge 6.0 to do the recording and with my mixer plugged into my laptops mic jack the audio levels in soundforge are already in the yellow. Now I'm assuming its because I used a mic jack to record a stereo signal and theres so feedback or interference.
The question is, Dum Dum Dum, what kind of external equipment can I get to get the signal directly into my laptop with an improved audio signal? (I'm thinking like some sort of external sound processor with USB connectivity).
Any help is greatly appreciated. |

Yes - the line level output from your mixer is about a volt and way too high for a mic input which is a few millivolts. But you can for a few dollars build a little "L-Pad" attenuator to reduce the voltage by 40 or 50 db. It is just 2 resistors. Do a search and you can find plans. I made one to record line-level into a camcorder mic input and it works great.
Alternately you could get a USB device as Sjodalf says.
Or Echo Audio has the "Indigo io" card at http://www.echoaudio.com - it has a high quality line-level stereo input and an output. No USB cable and very compact, plugs into the PCMCIA slot.
