What Is the Best MP3 Player Out These Days? (Hardware Only)

I am in the market to buy my first ever mp3 player. I've narrowed it down to IPOD (20gigs) and IRiver (40 gigs) Both are the same price.
Which do you guys think is better? If there is one better than the 2 I mentioned, please let me know.
I would like to hear you personal experiences. I've heard a big problem with IPOD is the battery having to be replaced and it being very expensive.
The best price I've found on an IPOD is $380 after shipping to California. However, if anyone knows a cheaper place. Let me know |

I can only speak on experience for the iPod 20GB - the player itself is fantastic, it really is a quality unit, easy to use, yada yada yada...
The battery life is a little less than what i was expecting (roughly 8 hours per charge), and the Apple originally didnt have much of a policy of replacing batteries - that and their warranty usually expired before the battery died.
I think thats been rectified as of late, not sure about the price, but they will replace your battery for about $99 US..
try here for more questions - tis a good site http://ipodbatteryfaq.com/ |

I've had 5 iPods over the past two years (upgrades, gifts, etc)... get an iPod. They are amazing, and work so well with iTunes. I currently sold my 30GB iPod to get the 4GB iPod Mini. I love that thing! It's amazing!

Ps. I only payed 69 dollars for mine:D Cash back from a price reduction in the cost of my comp. |

i have an ipod and i luurve it. such a sexy piece of equipment. i am still learning how to use it (i don't think the volume goes liud enough but maybe i am able to tweak that somehow with software) but its great.
yer i am pissed at the battery life, i reckon its far less than 8 hours. anyone know if there is anything you can do to prolong the baterry life? |

swisstoni,
make sure you have the volume equalizer on so that all tracks are more or less played at the same volume (you won't have to adjust the volume as often).
as far as battery life.... first-time ipod users should "calibrate" the battery by charging it all the way, then draining it completely, then charging it 100% again. that way you get the most out of the battery. the only real way to get more battery life is don't use the backlight, don't shuffle through tracks as often, don't play games on it/do other things while listening to music. any action that accesses the hard drive (shuffling through music to find a song you want), turns on something else (sound equalizer, backlight, games, etc) will drain the battery more.
hope that helps?

Let me add some praise for the iPod. I have a 3rd Gen. 15GB one that I got direct from Apple, engraved, with free shipping - $270.
The iPod is great for listening to DJ sets because the jog wheel lets you skip forward to any part of the set that you want. It's much better than a fast-forward button. |
