I had similar problems,
with VTT 1.8 installed and total recorder.
it's total recorder that messes with the settings, with it installed i found that the MP3 player i use ( Sonique not winamp ) would play at half speed and that VTT would also be a lot slower than it should.
I did look for a way around it but as total recorder wants to use exclusivly some resources of the sound card it will affect programs like VTT and Sonique.
It does not affect Winamp i found cos it assumes that most ppl use Winamp for playing MP3.
the only cure i found was to un install total recorder .
i now record direct to CDr
