Free recording software

I need some free software that records in mp3 format so it doesnt take up too much room. so far i've only found stuff that lets me record 30 seconds or so because it is trial. i guess i can 'purchase' keycodes but i wanna see if theres a free alternative. can anyone help?
to clarify, i'm talking about recording from a mic onto pc. |

google for "cdex" its simply the best, has all formats, is the fastest, totally blows all other rippers out of the water...
