its the fasting of 40 days that starts on Ash Wednesday, its supposed to honor the time that Jesus went out in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights without food or water. When you give up something for lent, its supposed to be something meaningful that you can readily give up (like sweets, caffiene, fast food, soda etc...)
And also all the partying and stuff that leads up to the day before Ash Wednesday (Fat Tuesday aka Mardi Gras) is the culmination of doing everything you can and partying before you start fasting or giving up whatever it is for Lent.
Lent ends in 40 days on Easter Sunday |

I'm giving up making snide comments to theists on forums. Maybe. Possibly. Ok, I'm not giving up anything. :(
Dave, do you mean how the Earth/Universe was created, or where the human species came from? |

Well, evidently humans came about through evolution, which has essentially been proven now. There are no alternative scientific theories that hold any water, creationism and Raelian (sp?) type "aliens made us" theories have been thoroughly debunked and falsified.
As for where the universe came from, as far as I understand it, we simply don't know. I'm no expert on the topic, much the opposite in fact, but from what i understand we can essentially tell what happened right up until the big bang, but before that it's all a mystery. There are a lot of theories floating around, I think there's one that states that the universe didn't actually have a beginning, it's just there, and another that seems to suggest an infinite cycle of big bang, expansion, contraction, implosion, big bang, expansion and so forth. Either way, it's something that really interests me, so I intend to read up on it in the next few years. |
