So i've finally upgraded to Windows XP from Windows 98 because of all these great things I've heard from everyone. I really like it, but theres an issue I have:

-I keep getting these "Messenger Service" messages all the time advertising kinda but it only says "o.k" at the bottom & isnt like your normal pop-up where u click on it & sends u to a link. It looks kinda like a Windows pop-up screen thats advertising. Has anyone experienced these or is there any way to get rid of them?

Again, it doesnt look like adware (or maybe it is) but it looks like windows is advertising certain things.

The messenger service was built in for administrators to send messages to clients on networks, but they never thought about how companies would use it. Your gonna have to either A). Live with it, B). Shell out $20 USD at www.stopads.com or something like that, they'll give you links in the popups, or C). PM me for the pop-up blocker, if I still have it.

NO NO! You just gotta disable the Messenger Service in your services menu.

(if using XP Pro)

Go to Control Panel
Administratie Tools
Services
View the services in "Standard" tab
Right click "Messenger" service and disable.

No more messages!

Also make sure to disable it from starting everytime you start Windows. Otherwise it will only disable it for the current time, and will start again next time you start Windows.

How is that done?
I did the disable in the Administrative Tools, but will that stop it from starting everytime?
jon
disabling in admin tools will stop it, so if you have done it allready, then you will never get pestered by them again.

to make sure it doesnt start when u reboot select MANUAL instead of AUTOMATIC in the dialog box and stop it, that way it will not start unless u turn it on yourself

or u could just block any incoming traffic from port 139/135?

thats the port used to send the windows messages. i read it on some tech forum a few days ago for some reason...

98 dont have any of that crap. but then it sucks anyway.
