I will be getting a 1mb connection next month and I have been trying to work out just what that means. Basically I want to know how long it will take me to d/l a megabyte with this connection. Iam not very clued up when it comes to bits, bytes etc and so far I haven't had any luck :(

1mb = about 150kb/s, so at your max speed it'll take you about 8 seconds.

Is that definate? Another website I've posted on told me it would take 80 seconds. If it is 8 seconds though that would be really cool :eyes:

1/8 = 0.125
So your max speed is 125 Kbyte per second (a byte has 8 bits). Thus to download a megabyte at your maximum speed u would need 8 seconds. You won't get that much speed all the time though!

There are 8 bits in 1 byte, so a 1 Mb connection equates to, as pointed out, about 1024/8 = 128 KB/s (notice we use small b for bit and big B for byte). Downloading 1 MB (1024 KB) would thus take about 1024/128 = 8 s. Of course you rarely get the full speed as advertised, but it will certainly be quicker than 80 s to download a megabyte (that would equate to under 13 KB/s, for the record).

1mbit is 1024kbit is 128kbyte/s minus 14% (tpc overhead) is 110kb/s and thats about what you can expect
