Running A vst effect in cubase

Hey,
I'm new to cubase and have been trying to run the vst effects i have into one of the channels which has my bassline in and only that one channel.
I can run the vst effect to the whole tune with master effects but i'm unsure how to run it to one perticular channel?
If you could help that would be great.
Thanx

Depends what kind of effect.

This doesn't only apply to Cubase, but to general mixing.

A basic rule would be : spectral (EQ, filters, ...) and dynamic (compressors, gates, expanders, ...) effects go on inserts.
Temporal effects like reverb and delay go on sends.

If you want to put a spectral or dynamic effect on one track, let's say a compressor, just go to the mixer page (in later versions like SX you can even do it in the inspector of that track) and put the effect in an insert slot of the track you want the effect to work on.

For sends, this depends on the version you use.

I'm not sure which version you are using. But just me say how you'd work in SX 1 and 2, as those methods differ (don't exactly remember how Cubase VST handled it).

SX 1 : open VST Sends window (it's in a menu), and select the wanted effect. Then go to the track you want to put an effect on, and locate the sends section. In that section you have different slots. Select the effect you want (it HAS to be setup in the VST sends window first) and adjust the slider for the amount of signal you want to put in the effect.

SX 2 : create an FX channel, it will ask you what kind of effect you want it to be, select it from the list. Now same as in SX1, go to the sends section of the track you wanna affect, select the right FX channel in the slot, and again, open up the fader to send it to the effect. The wet signal (effect) will be routed to the FX channel, so you need to open that fader to hear the effect added.

Hey,
i'm using cubase Sx not sure what sx.
But in send or inserts there is only the cubase effects.
It won't let you use the vst effect which is in vst sends?
Do you know why this is?
Thanx

If you want to use 3d party FX, you need to make sure the dll of that particular effect is in the Program Files/Steinberg/Vstplugins directory. Usually the installer of that effect will take care of it, but there are some occasions where you have to copy it there yourself.

But like I said, the sends effects are only available if you set them up in the VST Sends window first. You don't need to that for insert effects. The master inserts are also available in a separate window, but you can access them like any other insert in the mixer window.

Other than that it works like I said. The system has improved in SX 2, because it approaches the "real" method that is used with hardware more. In version two you don't have that Sends window anymore, everything works with FX channels.

Even when i turn the vst effect on in the Vst sends window i look in sends and try and use the drop down menu and there are only eight cubase effects and not the vst effects that i have put in the vst sends window.

Hmm weird, shouldn't behave that way?

What are the effects you are trying to put in?
