Ground Problem

The phono jack on my reciever sounds like ass whenever i run a signal to it. at first i tried just running RCAs to the Phono jacks, sounds all distorted. then i ran a piece of wire going from the screw where my TTs are grounded on my mixer to the ground on my reciever. still sounds like ass. but when i run the RCAs to the CD input for example and only have the TTs grounded to the mixer, everything sounds perfect.
I'm thinking that the ground on my reciever is screwed, what do you guys think?
thanks

You say you ran the RCA cables from the turntable straight to the CD input of the receiver, and the ground from the TT to the ground on the mixer? This should give a very low signal indeed, with little or no bass. Have you tried hooking the RCAs up to the phono input of the receiver, and the ground to the mixer? If it does sound normal connected to the CD input, then it sounds like you have a TT that outputs a line-level signal... I think some Stanton TT's are capable of this. Either connect the RCA's to a line input of the mixer, or there will probably be a switch on the TT to change between phono level and line level output.
If it does turn out to be a faulty ground on the receiver, this shouldn't be too much problem... just run the signal through hte mixer. If you really have to fix it, open up the receiver and have a look at where the grounding post goes in. Chances are, a wire has fallen off or a connection has bcome corroded. This should be easily fixable. |
