The difference between rap and hip hop is liek difference between progressive trance and progressive house... unless you are into it you wont be able to separate them

generally i would say, the rap is the vocal and hip hop is the music.
both combined is "tha " ;) :D

Hip-hop is the culture that consists in:
Rapping (the words)
Breakdancing (the dance)
Graffiti (the art)
DJ'ing (you know what it is :p)

DJ'ing and Rapping combined lead to Hip Hop music, but they can be independent: you may rap without a DJ, and you may DJ without a rapper ;)

^ he hit it right on the head
Hip-Hop is the culture, Rap is just one aspect of that culture, ie, the MC rhyming over a beat.
mto
hip-hop is the culture, however it is somewhat of a genre as well.

now days u might consider artists like missy elliot to be hip-hop
and artists like jay-z to be rap. the reason is that missy uses so much of the culture mentioned above (the dancing, graffiti and etc). jay-z on the other hand just spits and keeps it 'hood'. :)

hip hop = culture
rap = music, a part of hip hop.

MCing
Graffing
BBoying
DJing
these are all parts of hip hop.

The people who really support hip hop isnt on mainstream radio

The underground hip hop scence is just great, you meet a whole lot of people and its not about gansta rap and crap such as you hear on the radio. HIP HOP is a CULTURE!!!

if you meet any graffer, ture mcs, djs who have skills and bboy/bgirls they are some of the most down to earth people you could ever meet. And most bboys/bgirls i know listen to house/dnb/jungle along with old/new skool breaks and freestyle....the hip hop culture and EDM scene is very much alike in a lot of ways

So true. It's kinda sad to see how people view themselves at elitest electronica heads while at the same time cannnot find themselves appreciating, or better yet, understanding a culture and a musical style that is just as diverse and 'underground' as trance or EDM.
Simple put, you have to understand music to appreciate it.
