Alexei Kovalev to Montreal
Josef Balej and a second-round pick to New York
Story
Sergei Gonchar to Boston
Shaone Morrisonn and two draft picks to Washington
Story
So, how will these change the balance. I think the Montreal deal certainly adds another unknown to their playoff chances. They already have the most important ingredient in playoff success with Theodore, now they have a finisher. Let's just hope Kovalev gets over his New York Rangers syndrome.
Boston looks to have shored up one of their weak points with Gonchar. I personally can't see it making too much of a difference, they're still going out in the first round IMO.
So who's left on Washington? Kolzig. I would say that the Avs are after him, but we'll see what happens. |

Theodore is amazing when playing good, but just horrid, horrid when he's off. He needs consistency.
Habs need more than Kovalev to get more offensive going. Right now, their main threats are Ribeiro and Ryder, who are good players but still very young and Koivu.
Habs rise and fall in playoffs this year will depend on Theodore, just like the Ducks and Giguere last year.
But going up against teams like Toronto, Ottawa and Boston, Montreal don't have enough, at least on paper, to make it far.
Good trade though. Didn't give up too much for Kovalev.
Boston acquiring Gonchar makes it a big threat. They have both the offence and decent defence for good playoff run, but Raycroft may fall apart. Potvin is decent, but his good days are gone.
If Toronto had gotten Gonchar, they would be unstoppable. Gah. |

| Olaf Kolzig is the next Capital to go. Or Brendan Witt... |

To Edmonton: Petr Nedved, Jussi Markanen
To New York: Dwight Helminen, Stephen Valiquette and a 2nd round pick
To Toronto: Brian Leetch
To New York: Maxim Kondratiev, Jarkko Immonen, 1st rd pick (2004), 2nd rd pick (2005)
Wow, after spending such a long time building up such a ty team, NYR are starting to dismantle it for draft picks?!?!?! I guess they are finally realising the error in their ways. |

Man, the playoffs are going to be insane this year...everyone is spending on rentals.
I think whoever ends up winning the Northeast is going to be in good shape, with the other teams being in for a long, probably too long, road.
Can't discount the Lightning either!
West is still hard to call, can't ever argue against Detroit though.
What wouldn't I give for a Toronto vs. Detroit final?
End to end action all the way in that one... |

Despite Leafs having ty history of grabbing defenceman with 1st round picks, I'm glad Leafs picked up Leetch. That man still got few years of good hockey left and Toronto needed a good PP defenceman badly.
Leafs for the Cup... Only if they don't get anymore injuries. :p :D |
