In theory that would work; but those paying the taxes should get special cards that allow them to ride it for free...

Visitors or those outside the tax-infected area should pay a nominal fee like a $1, since they did not contribute to the free ride...:D

Even tho I would benefit greatly from this, I am so against it.

The financial elite who drive to work in a mercedes benz don't live inside the city, they live somewhere in richmond hill or north york and commute to work in a car EITHER WAY! Free TTC wouldnt be incentive enough to get them to use it.

Those who rent can stand to gain from this however.

I would suggest maybe a rollback to $2.00 instead of $2.25 per ticket.

I do agree! People just won't buy into it. Much like you said, the financial elite don't 'just happen to' live in a place like Richmond Hill or even towns like where I am in Oakville. They want their large, cookie cutter houses with rolling meadow yards and luxury sedans/SUVs. Obviously however, in order to achieve and maintain all of that, many of them need to work in Toronto but will not settle for sub-par public transit (like the TTC).

Knowing what Kind of pricks and OVERPAID peopel the TTC are, they would probably still charge "eventually" after (if ever) this kind of thing were ever to happen. TTC..... Thinking it would be better to get a g2 and a car from 1976. Trust me. Lookin' for a cheap old car? Come To the 'Shwa. The only good thing I noticed up here and Cheaper gas :toothless

This is a rediculous leftist idea! If you raise property taxes then rent will jet up like crazy. With the current low interest rates real-estate prices are already a bit inflated, guess what is going to happen with the additional tax... There's no free lunch ppl! If you really want to reduce TTC fares then one way of doing it is privatizing it, so that it can be run more efficiently. But this won't work, it's like the same thing as privatizing the sewege system (good luck finding the right pipes for your bathroom if it leeks). lol

but that's your own choice. you should pay taxes on gas you use to support a better way or travelling.

I'd suppoort a slight gas tax increase at the pump...and a $1000 tax on any SUV or high end sports car bought here or imported into the province. Voila...another billion for the TTC :D

For one thing, increasing costs like property taxes s over people on fixed incomes. But really I just don't want anything like that to discourage anyone from buying a home...since I work in mortgages for a big, evil bank :tongue2

btw...I dunno about the TTC ever being privatized...you'd see huge service cuts to less populated/travelled areas all in the name of profit. For a great example of what can happen when public accountability is gone, look at the 407 ownership who's having to be taken to court to lower tolls back to previously agreed upon levels...

True that! But on the other hand, with the way it is right now (government-run monopoly) there's no way of determining what their true costs are! You can kind of compare it to other subways in other cities (if they have the same infrastructure) but there are still a million ways for the TTC management to bull around and cry about their increasing costs. It is a tough question and it's really dangerous to monkey around with a thing like that. The solution is that the TTC probably needs to be more strictly monitored on their expenses and costs.

Another "funny" topic is taxicabs. The last time I asked, a taxi medalion (licence to hire drivers and lease cars) was $120,000. Now think about the low wages that those poor drivers are making... If you try to help them by increasing the fare = price for medalion goes up. If there aren't enough cabs in the city and you decide to issue more medalions = a protest at the city hall cos prices for medalions go down along with the fares.. I guess it really is tough to be a politician, especially when ppl know what you're talking about and can read between lines... :toothless
meh, this, lets talk about trance :)
