Recording direct from mixer

I know many of you make CD's at home. Having a little technical trouble with my equipment. I plug my laptop into my mixer to record using whatever software (doesn't matter). As soon as I plug the power cord of the laptop in, I get a horrible hum from it coming through the speakers and it ruins the recording. The only way I can record anything is to unplug the laptop and run on battery, unfortunately, that isn't long enough for a whole cd. It's rather annoying, any suggestions?

maybe one of those monster surge strips that reduce electrical interference.
Here is one from Future Shop

It's expensive though. You can always buy it, try it, and return it if you dont like it:D

Sounds like a ground-loop problem. Uhm.. I'm no expert in lifting grounds so if anyone else has any suggestions please feel free to dive into this problem.

Ground your decks on your mixer.

Hopefully your mixer has a grounded 3 prong plug that goes into the power outlet.

If not - then you have to ground your mixer to something that is grounded.

solution1: grounded power supply..
solution2: a voltage conditioner/regulator...

but the best solution is really relocate all ur equipment (including the computer) to a "clean" plug.

The voltage out of the plug isn't a perfect sine due to feedback noise. throughout the house, other appliances (usually the bigger ones and the ones with CRT tubes up their asses) affect the shape of the wave, (blah blah blah, blah blah blah, spare poor guy from booring theory here :p)

so yea... unplug, relocate, doesn't work, unplug, relocate... doesn't work, seek solutions 1 or 2. Don't work, u got some serious wiring problems or too much dirty appliances in the system running all at the same time.

in the mean time, if u find a way to get rid of that buzz, get back to me. i would really love to know if i was remotly right... i used to have that problem till we bought a new fridge in our place.. so i know that was the case here.

Everything is correctly grounded, grounded mixer with a 3 prong plug, along with the turntables grounded to the mixer. The laptop power supply is plugged into the same power bar with a 3 prong plug (also same problem not using the same power bar). My only guess now is I try the conditioner.
