yep, that's how it was... the US screams about the NYPD firefighters risking their lives saving people at the WTC... what about the chernobyl firefighters? the cleanup crews? they were not just risking their lives, they were giving them away to prevent further damage and more deaths. just a comparison to say that the US takes things out of proportion.
agree... although i wasnt alive back then i dont think, or maybe i was really young, so i wouldnt of herd of anything..... but sure were some brave poeple that went there

Don't diminish either one... both were very brave. It's just a matter of getting the message out to the American media to cover things like Chernobyl more.

Also remember that at that time the USSR was our mortal enemy, so if anything bad happens to our enemy, it's a good thing (or at least a neutral thing). Many in the West declared victory in the Cold War that day.

I remember being young and constantly watching it on TV, I didn't understand much back then but it was a major tragedy and thousands of people were rapidly dying off. I also heard they still have strawberries growing to the size of a fist and yes it will cost you your life to taste one. The radiation zone is so wide people still check their food for safety thousands kilometers away from the epicenter.

What are your thoughts on nuclear power?

I'm a little hesitant to believe you... The government blocked any sort of information about the incident (along with the incident itself) from the news for a LONG time. And when they did, it was only for a short bit of time.

If anything, it was the people that let everyone know through word of mouth and underground newspapers.

Everyone in ukraine knew from western sources rather than their own government. Ukraine officially acknowledged this a week after the disaster. People weren't "dropping dead in the streets" though... Interestingly enough the city Kiev was actually evacuated twice. Once shortly after the accident, and then again when the contaminated leaves began to breakdown giving off tons of radioactive dust into the atmosphere.
