Comments as i listen:

cool intro, the kick sounda bit like tiesto - traffik (or is that my dodgey headphones) cool intro anywho, you used a good range of percs, i like the hats especially. Overall nice little bit of tech trance, good leads and fx, nice work mate!
nickmahoney
thanks for your comments terraplex! i took a listen to "my soul" and left some feedback for you. i dont really know the kick from Traffic (should i have kept that too myself?), but i found this kick in the strangest of places and am moderately OBSESSED with it.

lo nick

not my kinda style..

but anyway

kick is to low a bit.

not to much perc used, but not sure if it's that needed in this stlye..

track need some mastering and bit more mixing, the base is bit dominating as far as i can hear.

i like the idea, just sound so empty, but it's not my style like i said :P
Mr.Mystery
Hmm, your synths are way too dry and basic. It doesn't really help that every single sounds comes from the dead centre, it makes the track sound very flat and dull and most of all mono.
The percs are very simple and don't really add any pace to the tune that you've tried to achieve.

I can also barely hear the beat. It's mostly because the beat has only low frequencies and not highs at all, it gets drowned in the mix.

I can't really say I enjoy the melody much either...

Edit:
It's no wonder, this actually IS mono!
nickmahoney
oh man, i accidently encoded to mono!

thanks mystery for the heads up, i'm surprised you were the first to notice.

i re-eq'd the track, and removed some of the filter off the kick to give it a touch more hi's and re-posted.

as far as the synths being dry and basic and the perc's being simple, i have to defend them as part of what i want in the song. i dont make tracks with tons of reverb sawtooth synths and hi pitched/crunchy bass and top heavy kicks because alot of other people are doing that and they do it very well and better than i do. i was going for something that was dark but light with a hypnotic bassline, kinda minimal, and with energy. that being said, any suggestions on making them less basic but not standard Leads would be greatly appreciated.

anyways, thanks for your comments mystery and massive.

Nice bassline you have backing up the main synth. The buildup after 2:00 is almost anti-climatic, in the sense that your counterpoint becomes your leading melody, and your leading melody becomes your counterpoint.

Some good ideas in this track, but it's hindered by the feeling that it doesn't really go anywhere. Hihats also aren't as pronounced as they should be, they're getting lost in the mix.

Not really feeling the hypnotic bassline, the main synth adds more energy and takes away from a hypnotic feel. If you want more hypnotic, try using more of the sawtooth with the upper harmonics filtered out - that had much more of a hypnotic element than anything else.

If you want a different sound with your synths, then try going for something completely different, not just something that's more basic.
nickmahoney
tranc3 - you're right, the counterpoint does become more of the focus. i dont think i intended it to be like that. i didnt want a climax to build at all with the leads, i really wanted the kick to be the focal point.

when trying to make a hypnotic track, i think the sign of failure is having it appear to not go anywhere.

thanks for the comments.

Hey Nick just listened to your track. The ideas int it are ok but I'd like to hear more of the percussion! Seems like you left the high frequences away, which gives a muddy feeling all around.

This style is popular these days, so people like to hear it, so you should make more :D But spend some more time EQ-ing and leveling.

Keep it up!

nickmahoney
jay m - thanks for the inspiring words.

i think that this IS similar to some stuff people are playing (rauhofer, etc) and i was going for that kind of bassline. it seems like everyone wants more perc. in this one, so i will see if i can add it and see how it sounds. looking forward to reposting when i mix it up a bit.

PS does anyone use T-Rack's 24 for mastering? i have a suite i made and i like it, but apparently no one else does. where can i find some good suite presets?
