Stanton RM3-S question...

my friend just started getting a pair of old Tech12mk2's rebuilt. he got them for cheap about two years ago when the dream of being a DJ finally evoked in his mind. he's been saving up ever since. now he has 4 decks, 2 which are in bad condition, but the motor and pitch control work perfectly, these are the ones getting re-done. the other 2 are screwed up, and he is selling them for a really low price to a guy who is embarking on the same road as he did.
he's getting the faces of the decks painted yellow, blue LEDs, and with the rest of the cash has bought a nice set of vinyls, Ortofon Concorde Pro DJ S's, Pioneer HJD-1000's and a Stanton RM3-S. he's gotten good deals on all of it, and its better for him to start with good gear than crappy he'll have to upgrade quickly.
now, the technics are being worked on, so he had no decks atm, i just got back from my other friend's house, who has Stanton STR8-80's. he also has a quite crappy mixer, i think it's an SK6. well, its not super crappy, only it has no Mid's, or panning. but it has a cue crossfader which allows you to control the monitoring of both channels.
so my other friend brings his shiny new RM3-S mixer along, and i see it has a cue crossfader as well, only instead of saying CH 01/CH 02 it says PFL/PGM. he is not sure how all the features work, as he is still getting his first setup ever. our other friend, who DOES have decks, says he's not sure how it is supposed to work, but to leave it pulled to PFL and use the the CUE ON/OFF switches on each channel, which we did. we had fun mixing around for a while, but it got me wondering.
how does this thing work? can i use it for crossfading from channel to channel like on the SK6, or not, and what is PGM for? any help would be greatly appreciated, by both me who is going to be using this setup a lot to screw around with at my friend's houses, and by my friend, who wants to know about this feature... |

i gotten rid of my rm-3s a few months back but here goes:
underneith the eq's on each bus there's a switch that turns cue on or off. when cue is turned on and the cue pan is moved all the way to the left to "PFL" (Pre Fader Listen) the bus that has the switch that's on will be heard through the headphones. When you have let's say channel 1 playing through the speakers and you wanna cue channel 3, simply turn on cue on ch3. Now you will be able to hear what's on channel 3 and if you wanna monitor the program output simply slide the cue pan to "PGM" meaning program. There you can fade in your headphones between what's live and what's cued. |

hmmm... im not 100% sure, but i think when we pulled it to PGM, it would go silent, no matter if we were playing a track with it's volume fader all the way up. ill ask my friend and come back.
btw, why did you "get rid" of it? seems like a solid mixer to me. |

i'm not sure if i read all of that right, but here goes......
PGM - i believe stands for Program, meaning the stuff that is playing that everybody can hear
PFL - i think this stands for Pre Fader Listen (or Level) - meaning what you have cued up in your headphones
on my mixer, when you have the knob all the way to PFL, all you hear in your headphones is what you have cued up, but if you turn it to PGM you can hear what is playing out load. this feature allows you to a little (or alot) of whats playing out to be in your phones while your cueing up your other song
i hope this anwsers your question, and if not maybe somebody with that mixer can chime in with the 411 |

| that's kinda weird that it would go silent if it's outputing through the master out and still be silent.... But then again, my rm3s' phono amps crapped out after owning it for 4 months. Good thing it was still under warranty. And good thing i got rid of it as soon as i got it back. Im never buying budget mixers again. im sticking w/ my empath. ;) |
