Formating C: in Windows XP???????

Can anyone please tellme the steps my comp is a mess and I want to format my c:, but if i go dos promt, than format c: i get this message:


Format cannont run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dimounted first.

than is askes do you want to dismount i go yes but nothing happens and i get the same messag every time i try to format again.

so anyone please help me out here!!

start xp setup and it will ask if u wanna format.

you need to running dos from a floppy otherwise ur issuing a command to the os on the hardrive to delete itself. i guess computers can't commit suicide. :haha:

its hard to believe you used to be able to fit the entire operating system on a floppy :eyes:

get into a commant promt prior to boot.

hold F8 or something while in POST, that should give u a menu.

You can do it from the XP install CD. Just put the disc in your CD drive and reboot. The system should boot from CD and then you'll find an option to erase/create partitions. Erase the partition that your OS is on and any other ones you want to get rid of and then create a new one to install the OS on.

you can actually do it right from within windows - just pop the cd in and the autoplay will come up just click install and it will ask u if u want to reinstall or do a fresh install and format.

fdisk.exe

format c: /s
(formats c drive as system drive in mbr)
