hello.
well, it seems that my current DVD player is a bit dated and i'm on the hunt for a new one. in fact, a new SUPER one.
I recently went to friends house and watched some video game channel where they talked about modding an XBox into a full fledged media player, from playing picture CDs, SVCDs, DVD-R(w), mp3 and the rest. Is there a retail store that offers this kind of "media center"?
1) I'm hoping to get some DVDs from Japan for my american player. Is there still region code protection on new DVD Players?
2) the ability to play music CDs, CD-R(w), DVD-R(w)
3) Do new players support codecs such as OGG, DiVX and XViD?
4) power cord
online stores/retail stores? |

Almost all players sold in the US do have Region 1 locks on them. There are a number of them that you can buy that are region-free, you just have to look them up.

Any DVD player worth more than 50 cents should be able to play CDs and CD-Rs without a problem. Some drives are not compatible with recordable DVD's, though the DVD-R format is the most widely supported.

Many new players support DiVX, I have not heard of any that support XViD and I seriously doubt anything supports OGG...it is just not a widely used format.

do you want something like this, http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=dp500&v=users, or do you want the name of a person in San Diego who can install a mod chip in your xbox?
I did the xbox route and its awesome. It alse emulates C64, Nintendo 64, arcade games and GBA games. |

i've never used online ordering because of "conspiracy theories" in my head. Are there any stores that carry these type of media players? The ones from Kiss website are great, but i'd like to see if i can find them in a store.
the XBox route sounds pretty good. |

| Too bad the Xbox is so damn chunky, not nearly as sexy as most DVD players either. |
