I wrote a wee letter concerning the state of scotish sports to the editor of the herald. tell me what you think.:D

A concerned sports fan

After a dismal result against Wales and yet more agony at the hands of whipping boys (cough, cough) Italy i felt it was necessary to make my feelings public about the state our sporting nation.

Ok, we never exuded the brilliance of Pele's golden Brazilian team's, nor did we have the flair of New Zealand's back line in previous world cups, but one thing we did have was heart, something that no-one can take away from us?

Growing up as a rugby lad I have a better understanding of the game than most. My humble beginnings were at Uddingston RFC, but on going onto secondary school I continued to play through every year, continually proving myself, come rain, sleet or snow (with a hot cup of tea at the end as my reward) until one day I was selected for my first fifteen; an honour by anyones standards. In my last year of school I was some what shocked and again honoured to be selected for the Glasgow Schools team....

I went along to my first training session with this elite group of rugby playing Glasgow youngsters and got on happily with my warm up. It was once the real training started that i became aware of a feeling of deja-vu. " I'd been here before, i could recall these excercises from a past life, NO! I remember now, it was when i was 7 and playing for Uddingston". My point here is even though our coaches studied southern hemisphere training techniques as a model to base our game upon, they seem incapable of incorporating it into our club or school rugby. With the budget provided I can't say I'm surprised that we haven't gone any further in club/world terms.

So, I'll finally get to my main point after giving you my brief life story there. Sports in Scotland is on the decline. In football, rugby and funnily enough the sport we regard our own, golf. The problem is there is a severe lack of funding for any sports in this country. The government is far too concerned about choosing toilet seat's for the Holyrood bog's than getting out there and taking sports to people. We have talent oozing out there on our streets, but kids have nowhere safe to make best use of it and no one to guide them. Our local parks are awash with junkie needles, broken bottles and gang fights. A kid kicks a ball in the street, a policeman tells him to move on, a thug kicks an old woman in the head, nothing is seen - the policeman is still telling the boy off for playing footbal, you see!!

look out it should make the back page

Apparently the scottish team selectors (well at youth age and sevens team) also have issues with their players not playing for clubs in scotland.

I say this because my ex-flatmate was recently called up for the scotland sevens team (which incidentally must be e) but they didnt like the fact that he plays outside of scotland and in fact he was one of the few members to be picked who do play outside scotland.

It seems ludicrous that the selectors would bias against players playing in england where they would clearly be playing & training at a higher level and thus be better, simply.

This may all be bullshit cos i dont really speak to him much
But its just my 2 cents
