Above & Beyond tend to use really pounding kicks, and Armin does not. You may want to get an A&B style kick to go with that bassline, hehe. There really isn't any magic formula for this (at least that I know of); some kicks either will work well or won't, EQ'ing will just make it a little better. |

Well, keep in mind kick and bass are both in the low frequencies, so they are fighting against each other.
So when Eq'ing you have to decide which one of the two you're gonna use for the absolute low frequencies and which one for the "higher" low frequencies.
Don't be tempted to push 100 Hz on the kick, then pushing 100 Hz on the bass. That will only result in problems.
For example, take your kick for the real low thuds, then you might boost the 80-100 Hz range. As that part of the spectrum is already covered, you don't want to add to the bass in that same range (even better, it can even work better if you cut a little at the same frequencies in the bassline, to give the kick even more room). But if you wanna boost, do it on a higher harmonic. 200-300-500, it all depends on what sound you wanna create. Just keep in mind that you gotta cover the whole frequency range, and than trying to push two instruments in the same space means problems.
Another trick that's also much used, is kick over bass compression. The compressor compresses the bass, but it's the kick that triggers the compressor (through it's sidechain). That way, each time the kick goes, the bass gets compressed. Works best with short attack and release time (unless you want audible pumping). Obviously you need a compressor that has a sidechain (or stereo link for hardware compressors, you can "recreate" sidechaining with that). |
