Legal question [for motorists]

I'm hoping somebody either knows the relevant law on this or maybe has a copy of the Driver's Handbook lying around. I could swear I remember being told in driving school that it was legal to stop anywhere for enough time to pick something up or drop something off, as long as you're not blocking the roadway and there isn't a "no standing" or "no stopping" sign. But I can't seem to actually find the law or regulation anywhere. So I'm wondering if anyone here knows the deal on this.

I was under the impression that "standing" means leaving your vehicle to load or unload property from it, and "stopping" means stopping long enough to pick up or drop off passengers. So as long as it's not a "no standing" zone, if the hazard lights are on and you're only gone for a few minutes, you can't be ticketed. That's why some critical roads in Toronto don't just have No Parking signs, but also No Standing or No Stopping signs.

But I can't find the relevant law anywhere... any help guys?

Definitions from the Highway Traffics Act R.S.O. 1990, c. H. 8.

http://www.canlii.org/on/sta/cson/2.../h-8/whole.html

"stand" or "standing", when prohibited, means the halting of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except for the purpose of and while actually engaged in receiving or discharging passengers; ("immobilisation")

"stop" or "stopping", when prohibited, means the halting of a vehicle, even momentarily, whether occupied or not, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the directions of a police officer or of a traffic control sign or signal; ("arręt")

"park" or "parking", when prohibited, means the standing of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except when standing temporarily for the purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading merchandise or passengers; ("stationnement")

Can't seem to find any regulations re: singage.
