Whether you're an Anglo-Saxon or not, the monarchy is just as much a part of our history as George Washington is to the Yanks. Getting rid of it would be akin to ripping a page out of our history books. Would the Greeks tear down the acropolis or the Italians remove the Colosseum because it costs millions each year to preserve them? Would the Americans take down the Lincoln memorial because pigeons all over it and it expensive to keep clean? Nope.
The Queen doesn't even have any power...she is a living link to the Canadian past. I don't understand why there is so much antagonism toward the institution. So what if it costs a few million to bring a royal over here every few years? Do you know how much a royal visit helps tourism?
I think Canada is probably the only country in the world where a significant amount of people are actually willing to erase their history. |

i totally agree with keeping the monarchy around for symbolic purposes... but this is ridiculous... i think even 20 million a year is too much, and 41 mil is absolutely ludicrous... i can't remember the last time i heard about the gg doing something useful, like visiting sick vets or something cool... that's the kind of they're supposed to be doing... boosting morale and refining our image around the world... ggs who abuse their priveledges like this should be sacked immediately.
if i can remember canadian history properly, the fathers of confederation structured our government after the brits cause we didn't want to be like the americans... so let's keep it that way. keep the monarchy around, but hold them accountable... |
