From my experience, every pro producer only DJs when doing a live show (Paul Van Dyk, Corsten, etc etc) But I've also heard that some groups can actually produce the music live (with a keyboard on stage and such)..
how come Corsten and Van Dyk don't do this?
how is it done?
How much of it is sequenced? |
Lots of people wonder a lot of DJs, who "compose" their own music dont actually play LIVE... If you think about it, it would be far more rewarding knowing you got a crowd rocking by what you are playing on a keyboard than playing someone elses music...
The thing is, and many DJs who write their own music have stated on record in interviews:- that they cant PLAY A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
Now ofcourse playing Live most of the time requires you to play an instrument. It is possible to play "LIVE" without playing an instrument but in trance its difficult because pads and strings play a vital role in trance productions, and these need to be played on a keyboard in Live productions....
The parts that are pre recordered is the repetitive stuff... drums / bassline / percussion.... they are chooped up in different loops and the performer plays them in the order he wishes.
Ofcourse things such as manipulating the Cutoff Frequency on stage is quite easy for a DJ to do... because they are manipulating the sounds just like on a mixer... |

ONION would you know what hardware would be required to make that magic happen ?
I'm really interested in doing this. But the freaky part is that I want to do it on my own. I looked for some hardware sequencers etc... but really haven't found an answer to my problem yet..
PS : A laptop is also hardware :)
Cheers ! |

| Nu-NRG live at Gatecrasher last year I would say was them playing cd's, mixing out into what you could consider the 'live part' (drums more or less) then mixing back into a cd. They played the Rank1 mix of Dreamland if I remember rightly which sort of gave it away but I can't be sure...that was just my take in what they were doing. |

| I would not call a live with the ableton live program a live in the strict sense as you just order some audio loops, efx them and order them.. |

Thats right, Ableton on its own with a track cut into loops is not playing live.
Ableton is only used in a live performance with loops.... / the stuff thats already pre recorded... which is manipulated through midi channels by the performer. There are so many elements to a track that its impossible for the performer to do everything live.
Everything else is using the hardware thats available... the LIVE stuff usually is: pads / strings / piano... increasing / decreasing the cutoff on a leadline etc. |

haha.. that's great...
I had a feeling that about 75% of a live production is sequenced... but playing a synth to a CD? I thought pro producers would be more creative then that :p |

Ok, so there are some examples of people not doing much live and people have mentioned some groups that seem to do it. What about Hybrid and Infusion. Supposidly they both do "Live" stuff pretty often. I know when Hybrid came to Cleveland they were billed as playing a something like a 3 hour live PA and then 3 DJ set.
Also I remember reading an interview with Infusion when they were asked about mp3s of there sets and they said they were for it because they do not record there live shows and that is the only way to hear some of the stuff. |

I have also seen Lab4 live, but even they are apparently more of a tweaking knobs and faders rather than hammering the melodies - still they do play some stuff 160bpm+ so fair play, you would have to be amazing to stay in time.

hehe id love to see them do contact london or even harder; candy man live :P
pretty hard riff to get on time when played alive (tried myself in my room :p) |

I play live! Thats all I have ever done. I have never been into playing records of other peoples music. As far as how much is live and how much is seq. Well most IS sequenced. How else would one person do it. But I do play one part out of every tune live. I think the question here though was how to go about doing it.
My live show runs on a g4 playing back one big cubase all midi sequence. All of my gear goes through a mixer and a delta 1010 audio interface. I use all fx and evrything else as I would when I'm just recording. But I have setup loop points and switches. I can mute and unmute track on the fly and repeat parts. I also have program changes recorded in cubase that set my gear up for the correct sounds for the song I play. Anyway thats how I do it. Back in the day I used a rm1x and and groove box as my sequencers. That was more fun if you ask me. But it did'nt sound as good. |

Lab 4 have written an excellent essay/rant about liveness, and to what degree that they are live. Well worth a read.
