Hi,
does anyone have experience with these sytnhs, since I would like to purchase one in the future. I know that both of these are amazing instruments, but want a little bit more insight in how they sound. For example, JP8000 is more raw sounding than Novation Supernova synths known for its melow, bubbly analog sounds.
What about Virus C vs. Nordlead3?

Hey Design, I just bought a Nordlead3 last week. I also am purchasing the Virus Powercore (which has the exact same sound as the C except without the new moog filters and a internal eq). I think these 2 synths compliment each other the best. The Nordlead3 is an incredible synth and probably the best sounding in terms of quality of sound. The nord has no built in effects but it sounds incredible. It is especially good at making pads and thats where it excels by far. But it can make incredibly fat leads using the unison and stack features, it can get as phat as any synth out there. The Virus C is also a great sounding synth but a bit more harsh. It can make really hard sounds, from acid lines to phat basses, and screaming leads. These 2 synths are a match made in heaven. As for the jp8080, well it does not stack up to the Nordlead3, not even close. Sound quality, features, interface, prgramming possibilities are far superior on the nord3. I've tried every major synth out there. I did not like the Q, I found it had a digital sound and lacked the analog warmth of the Virus. The supernova2 was really sweet, but I don't like Novation Synths. Something about the sound that just doesn't appeal to me. In the end I took the Nord and The Virus. Hope this helped. |

The Nord Lead is incredable for all round sounds, check out The Crystal methods 'Vegas' Album, Almost everything on that was nord and there are some mad sounds.
Plus its alot cheeper than the Virus |

The Nordlead is not alot cheaper. The Nordlead3 goes for around 1850US while the Virus KC goes for around 100 dollars more. |

what a great thread.. I've wondered this myself :)
I would agree with trancenrg69... the Nord has a very clean sound and is untouched by internal FX so you can add your own.. whereas the Acess is better for getting an original sound...
if I were to choose one I would go with the Acess Virus Powercore that trancenrg69 talked about becuase it's about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of a Nord Lead (eBay price) since it's a VSTi with hardware (PCI card) processing..
but if price didn't matter I would go with the nord 3 becuase of it's clean sound.. |

Having owned both, and only having one of them at the time (virus KC) I must say this: Regardless of what you hear here, Nord Lead 3 is one of those beasts that you either love it or you hate it. I like the way you can edit arpegio and easily split it. I also like how it looks and the fact that it feels solid. The indicators above knobs are a nice touch. However, what I really disliked in Nord was the sounds. They just sounded....... moldy. I mean, if you're after Moog sound or trying to fit in a classic-rock scene, maybe some other stuff (not trance) - nord is good for that. Virus, is all around versatile synth. It can sound like anything, plus the sheer number of options, efects, and so on that you have with Virus are mind numbing.
I tried to love Nord but it just didn't strike a note with me, forgive the pun. It's not a bad synth, it's just not for everyone. You can probably get a NL3 rack for about the same money as Virus C on ebay. Kbd version of Virus (KC) sell for about $1700 on ebay, while you can probably find NL3 for around $1300.
I also like the fact that you got 61 Keys with KC, but it doesn't matter if you're getting a rack version.
Either way - try it first in the store, see if it vibes with you.
BTW, Tiesto and Solar Stone both rave about NL3, I just don't feel it... sorry. Oh, and before you bash me, yes, I did wipe out all the NL3 factory patches and created my own, thank you very much. ;) |
