It's all very well saying sex is a natural function, but no other species (except dolphins) does it for pleasure, just for procreation.
Not that there's anything wrong with us, I'm just glad I got into this species (as I'm sure dolphins are). |

ABT...my bad for typing ATB....it was in no way a ref. to ATB...though a friend of mine went to hear him spin and said he was amazing. Anyhow appologies all around!:D And I don't know about your parents but mine at my age now were drinking and smoking pot. They were into the Grateful dead. So they weren't boring people. But in my house I was raised that sex was for marriage...which I strongly used to disagree with....and that drugs were a no no....which I still disagree with though I no longer do drugs. Also I can tell you from experience that having children changes your life. It puts your whole life into perspective. Maybe your parents were exciting people and just haven't shared those stories with you? Maybe they became boring bc they thought they should? Hmm...just throwing some stuff out there.
And Renegade you mentioned something about extinguishing all desires. If that was in reference to abstinence then you may misunderstand what abstinence is. Abstinence is not a distinguishing of those desires but rather one having control over them. And most people let the desire for sex control their actions rather then their mind. And there's nothing wrong in letting that happen...I believe its better to act in that manner within a truly stable relationship which can handle the risks of sex. I think no matter how stable a relationship is outside of marriage the stress, fear etc associated with STD's and pregnany can rip a relationship apart. How many times have you heard of a husband leaving his wife b/c she had an unplanned pregnancy? But how many times are there unwed people in serious relationships where the woman gets pregnant and the guy bolts? I know plenty in that situation. And what I'm saying isn't 100%...nothing in this life is 100%. I just feel that there are certain relationships that are more condusive to dealing with the risks associated with sex.
And I know I sound like some farty old mom...lol...but I'm only 21. I still go clubbing...went to PvD three weeks after I gave birth....now thats a die hard TA lol I'm still young...and having fun. Just b/c you choose to refrain from sex doesn't make you a conservative stick in the mud....and just b/c you choose to have sex doesnt make you a slut. I'm not trying to change your minds. I'm just telling my story, my thoughts on this subject. I just know that young adults...I am one....have this mindset that "oh it will never happen to me". But if that was really troo then all those statistics mentioned earlier wouldnt exsist. |

Yes, but regardless of what you're abstaining from, abstinance is still just the act of saying "no" to something, because you feel that indulging in that "something" is in some way risky. All I'm saying is, is that so long as you proceed with significant caution, there really are extremely few situations where the risk of STD's or unwanted pregnancy should stop you from having sex with someone. So long as you excersise caution, and you are comfortable with sleeping with this person (you're not just sleeping with them because you feel you have to) then I really can't think of any situation where abstinance (i.e. saying "no") should be used as a contraception. The tiny risk of adverse consequences when engaging in safe sex, is far outweighed by the benefits.
I guess what I'm saying is that caution and preparedness are far more efficient ways of avoiding STD's than that of abstinance (in any shape or form). If they'd teach kids how to be cautious and prepared when they do have sex instead of just telling them not to do it until they're married, then we wouldn't have problems on the same sort of magnitude that we have them now.
And I guess we're not on the subject, but I feel the same way about drugs. I mean I don't use them, but I still think that just telling people to abstain from using them isn't going to work, you've got to do your best to warn them of the risks and just make sure that they're prepared enough, so that when and if they do use them, they know how to do it responsibly without causing harm to themselves or anyone else. This is only in reference to drugs like amphetimines, marijuana, ecstacy, lsd's etc. by the way, which are, so far as we can tell, no more dangerous than alcohol. By banning these types of drugs, which are fairly safe so long as they are regulated properly, and pushing the "abstinance" line, governments are just making a hundered times more dangerous than they need to be - and I guess it's a similar sort of thing with sex. So long as you know what you're doing, abstinance shouldn't be an issue
Actually, reading back, I think we're kinda saying the same thing twilochik, just in a different way. Oh well........ :)

i'll agree with Renegade on a conceptual level, but i have to agree with Twilo that the reality is alot of people cant handle the responsiblity of sex at a young age. i'm not trying to push abstinance, and i dont think Twilo was saying that all kids should wait till they're married either.
i first slept with a girl at the age of 14. i look back now and realise it might have been better to wait until my first serious relationship which started when i was 17. i'm not an ignorant, uneducated person, but the fact is, when you are that age, you can get overly excited and not take the proper precautions all the time. at least thats what seemed to happen to me and most of my friends. luckily i didnt catch anything or get someone pregnant, but i cant say the same for some of the people i went to high-school with.
even though there is sex-ed in school, there is still alot of people that aren't very knowledgeable in the subject for whatever reason. as an example, i'll admit this girl is pretty dense, but i'll offer it anyway. there was a girl i knew when i was 15 or 16 that thought that she could get pregnant by giving a blowjob. LOL, but im sure there is more than 1 person that is this retarded.
im not trying to preach any christian beliefs either, im an atheist, and consider myself open-minded and tolerant of diferent beliefs/opinions than mine. i think there are alot of young people that can handle the responsibility, but i can guarantee there are alot that cant comprehend there are serious consequences. i've never abstained and i would never have listened to my parents or anyone else if they tried to tell me to, so im not trying to change anyones behaviour at all, just offering another perspective. im very careful these days and thats all the advice i'll give. all of this is IMHO and based on my experiences grownig up in CA. (hehe, my little disclosure statment so i cant get flamed) |
