What you can do:
- play up to 7.1 surround sound through the multiple audio outputs
- simultaneous full duplex recording and playback offered at 24bit/96kHz
- record and playback audio using the 24bit/96kHz AD/DA converters offering 100dB[A] dynamic range
- send and receive digital audio via the optical and coaxial S/PDIF in- and outputs (up to 24bit/96kHz without resampling)
- use the onboard hardware GM/GS synthesizer for sound creation
- restore old records by removing hiss, pops and clicks and transfer the results to audio CDs
- play software synthesizers and use effect plugins in real-time with ultra-low latency
- record high quality audio from condenser microphones requiring phantom power
- monitor your audio through a high quality headphone amplifier
- utilize the onboard 16ch MIDI interface for connection to external keyboards or sound modules/samplers
- direct hardware monitoring (zero latency) of input signals is possible..

Ahh ok I see what you're saying...currently I have an Audigy Gamer. Not a professional audio card, but I bought it before I really started getting into producing and quite frankly I don't want to spend any money right now. With that out of the way, I too have a 4.1 setup, but I'm only using 2 channels on the sound card...that is, I'm only using two of the plugs. Each channel can carry a stereo signal, and with one wired for the front and another wired for the back, a simple 2-channel output would suffice.

Oh about the latency...I'm currently at a 20ms latency, give or take a few ms (I can't remember the exact figure), and unless I'm really looking for it, there really isn't a noticable difference.

Slight delay? Yeah. Something I'm worried about/annoys me? No. It's close enough to real-time that it effectively IS real-time. IMO.

Good if you want to mix externally. You have to ask yourself if you want 8 mono outs. It might be a bit more than you want. I guess it all buils down to how much it costs.
