My own little revelation

We all know how important fx are when using VSTs but I was having
a play around tonight with a couple of plugins I've just got my
hands on (you all know them - Ozone & Sonicmaximizer) and I just can't
believe how much better these two fx make soft synths sound!
Now, I don't want this to turn into another soft vs hard argument
cos we're all sick of that - but I thought I'd post these two samples
just to show you soft-only guys how good those soft synths sound.
(I'm sure someone will slag the sounds, I KNOW it doesn't sound like
a JP8K or whatever - but it sound good to my (still fairly amatuer)
ears).

Here you go - the original:

Now with added Ozone & Sonic Maximiser
http://www.apws09.dsl.pipex.com/cygnus/cygnus.mp3

The 1st one sounds really muddy in the 1st half, then doesn't seem
to have the punch & warmth in the 2nd half, whilst the second sounds
soooo much better

(PS: The mp3s are about 400k - sorry for the size but I was trying
to keep them as good a quality as possible)

I have my volume pretty low currently but i couldn't tell much differance!
Sonicstyle
hm, I prefer the original more than the other version, the high frequencies are too loud in the other example
Tranc3
Your mastering left a lot of white noise and made it sound rather thin

HOLY FUKK EBALLZ

OUCH!

The second one has too many harsh Highs, its an easy trap to fall dont worry.

make something just in-between the original and the master and youll be on track.
shampones
no sheaat ! and theres this thing called a compressor , use it too , b4 the BBE

Is using any effects to change the sound considering mastering? (If not, that is what I got from your statement).

Hahaha, that kinda pissed on my fireworks! I wasn't saying the second sounded perfect (heck, I did it in 5 mins)
I just thought it sounded a lot better than the 1st one. Perhaps it's just me then.
Tranc3 - the original patch has a noise osc so the sound does have a fair amount of noise to it anyway & there
was no mastering as such.
Damie - I know the second needed a little bit of EQing (you should have heard it 1st time - way too many lows :D )

Anyway, I thought it sounded better - but its interesting to get other peoples opinions. I'll maybe have another
listen to it tonight (I was really knackered last night) and tweak it a little see if I can make it sound a little less 'harsh'
hey cheggy
Well it seems a bit silly to try to show the benefit of a sonic maximiser in 96kHz mp3. Anyway, the second one sounds like its just been eq'd to the house, cutting the lows and boosting the highs.

Yeah, fair enough - I was just trying to cut down the file size. I really thought that second one sounded better, but I guess I've still got a lot to learn :( . I'll maybe have a bit more of a play with it tonight.
Its interesting that the majority of you have commented that its more of an EQ problem rather than anything else (ie bad use of fx/bad synth sound/etc) (I've just opened myself up to more criticism there haven't I :D :D )
One thing I've just had a thought about is the fact I was putting it through my monitors that are at present set up for DJing and hence have a bass boost (hence cheggys point about the lows being cut)

hey cheggy
I don't know how the BBE one works, but generally, they just ad hi frequency overtones to the sound, which is really like giving a nice boost to the hi frequencies, which would explain the result.

And yes, your speakers would most likely be the reason why it sounds good to you and crap to us.

Ahahahahaha - you'll love this!!
I've just gotten home & listened to em again and you're all right - they suck :D I ran em through wavelab quickly & checked out the
spectrum and the 2nd one has some REALLY nasty activity over 15kHz!
I started panicking, thinking my monitors were f*cked cos it didn't really sound that 'toppy' on them....then I checked out my amp settings. Treble turned down to -8. I blame the girlfriend when she was dusting (fortunatley she doesn't read the board :D :D )
Anyway - I eqed it a bit and it sounded a lot better (not perfect, but better).

I must win the award for dozy twat of the month.
