- ing roofles. That mentatlity just indicates complete insecurity in your own musical taste. You are saying in order to have good taste, you MUST like what the big name djs are playing, otherwise its because no one else is playing it. LOL what a classic.

Ok, let's look at the facts...
If.. familiarity breeds response.. (Play the classic tunes that still send big fckoff shivers down your spine!)
And if.. curiosity kills the cat.. (Write your own tunes, do bootlegs, re-edits, mashups!)
Then.. You will have a combination of classic, cutting edge, and original music- and that's how you create your "signature style"
If you eat, sleep, shzit, trance (fairly safe assumption on this forum right?), inevitably, you'll meet & associate with people who can and do find fresh stuff. It's difficult to find an untouched gem but also entirely possible - don't close off to it.
But, my #1 peice of advise is dream! Don't forget the shivers down your spine. |

My insecurity in what I play! Hahaha, why because i don't play trance much anymore, because the trance these days sucks balls.
So because I play everything from Hard Trance to ing Hip Hop means i am insecure?
Who are some big name breaks DJs? Tell me, i don't know any, apart from Kid Kenobi who isn't that big. I don;t even download breaks sets, cause there arent many around, I buy what I like. I'm saying that avoiding what the big names play is futile. Maybe your mission in Djing is yourself, and making yourself feel good about what your playing. But remember a dj is there to please others, and give them a good time. If you can't combine the two then your ed. Start playing to a more diverse crowd, i think diversity is what some 'elitest' djs need. Otherwise you'll probably just end up playing for yourself in your bedroom for the rest of your life.
For me there is nothing better than making a crowd of non-electronic music lovers go off. Probably because that's the hardest.
I think insecurity is
- Not trying new styles.
And in relation to big name tracks i was referring to trance. Name a few brilliant trance tracks that a big name dj hasnt played. From Armin to J00F to the prog trance guys. I'm guessing it wont be a long list :D |

Adam Freeland, Krafty Kuts & A-Skillz, Meat Katie, Rennie Pilgrim, 10-Sui, etc. Teknoscaper can expand on these I'm sure. |

You didnt read my post properly...

Now I dont care if you play trance, or ing iraqi trip hop... it makes no difference to me. My point is too many Djs making demos, are copying bigname DJs in their tracklists.... instead of playing tracks that push boundaries...
Too many DJ's are playing anthems, because they are too worried about whether they are going to please a crowd or not, instead of having the belief that the new track they are about to drop is going to rock the entire joint...
Picture this scenario:
The DJ before you played the test set of his life, and the dancefloor is absolutely dead... people are starting to leave.
You get on the decks, contemplating which track you should drop to get the crowd back on the floor.
1. Do you drop an anthem or a well known caned track ??
OR
2. Do you drop a fresh track, that gave you the biggest hardon when you first heard it in the record store... that you know maybe 1 in 1000 people may have heard the track???
Option 2 without a doubt is what I would play. Trust me, you will get a bigger response. Ask JulesPless if you dont believe me : P. |

how often do u find a track like that which hasnt been caned? especially in trance.. i can only name a couple like that in the past 6 months.
from my experience.. in situations like that most of the time u need to drop a track which people know to break the ice. |
