French nutritionists give thumbs up to Big Mac

PARIS, France (Reuters) -- Want to stay fit and healthy?

Two top French nutritionists are telling people to go for a Big Mac and keep their fingers off the traditional French quiche.

In an unexpected message to a country priding itself on the superiority of its food, a new food guide praises the McDonald's burger for having a higher and healthier protein-to-fat ratio than France's Quiche Lorraine.

"Strangely enough, the products which are the most demonized are not necessarily the worst," Jean-Michel Cohen and Patrick Serog write in their book "Savoir Manger," in which they analyze 5,000 dishes available in shops and restaurants.

The verdict published this month comes as McDonald's launches a new campaign to add healthier food choices to its menus.

It has also said it is eliminating Supersize fries and soft drinks.

I don't know if you guys have Rally's (Checkers, Sonic) around you but I did an experiment with my room mate once. We only Big Bufords for two weeks straight. By the end of those two weeks I became physically ill every time I ate one. It was great though, I could eat as many as I wanted and not gain an ounce. (It's fun to be bulemic.) I'm pretty sure the same thing would happen if you went on a Big Mac only diet. Somebody try it. We could have just found a rival to the Subway diet.

Well, I personally eat loads of fat food and meat and I can't say I'm unhealthy or fat. There was a period in my life when I ate big mac-type foods all the time in pretty large amounts, usually about 2-3 big macs for a meal and I've never had more than 78kg. I guess it may be because I don't really like sweets and pop, so I always drank some juice instead of coke, and I ate really miniscule amounts of sugar.

since when did we start to believe in the french?

but yeah, kinda agree with tito, i also eat a lot of "bad" food, but i have never had any problem with too much weight, more the opposite actually... but it probably has more to do with how good your combustion is...

The selective perception of people when it comes to interpretating the media to meet their own views never fails to amaze me!

All the article says is that a quiche is worse for you than a Big Mac. Thats all. Nowhere has anyone ever said that a Big Mac was healthy!!!

Yeah, it really comes down to genetics. People who are destined to be fat are going to be fat, and unless they get operations and exercise like hell, they can't stop it. I'm lucky in that I have a really high metabolism, so I can eat lots of crap and not worry about it.

Now, here's my theory about McDonalds and France. The French don't like them, but a hell of a lot of them eat there. Why? McDonalds fries are actually better than a lot of the fries you can get in French restaurants. I've ordered plated of fries in bars and restaurants in Paris just to test my theory - I've never had so many ty potatoes.

So, basically, the French are pissed at McDonalds because the American fast food chain kicks their ass when it comes to making "pomme frites." And the French eat there, because its the only reliable place to get good fries.

Also...count me in as a Big Mac supporter. It's good stuff.
