BIO:
Definitions can often become an obsession and, when things get to that stage, it’s ATB who can help you clear your mind. The fourth album from André Tanneberger, alias ATB, featuring thirteen songs is appropriately called "Addicted To Music". The title is far from cheap showmanship - it perfectly describes the state of versatile musician, producer, DJ and remixer André Tanneberger (30) when he locks himself in his studio to work on new tracks. Simply the great feeling of being immersed in music, experimenting and trying out all kinds of ideas. The resulting "Addicted To Music" is made up of dance songs with character along with sexy and laid-back club tracks - exactly what you would expect from a new ATB album.
"I am addicted to music. The album title was a deliberate choice," says André. "When I produce an album, the most important thing is diversity. An album should not be boring, you need to incorporate different music styles throughout the record. Quite often that’s not easy on a dance album because you move to music totally differently at home than you do in a club."
If that is the case, ATB has got everything right on "Addicted To Music". The LP alternates between melancholic, spherical beats and gentle, whirling trance tracks. It is particularly exciting that André has once again worked with vocalist Roberta Carter Harrison. "Roberta has just got an amazing voice," says André. "I don’t need to tell her what kind of vocals I want." The Canadian singer breathes life into the tracks and a certain amount of emotion with her voice. "Emotions are very important for me," says André. "Feelings are often neglected especially in dance music. Having Roberta on vocals is a guarantee for very warm, intensive songs."
You understand what ATB means when you hear the songs. "In Love With The DJ" will easily fill any dance floor, while "Everything Is Wrong" is soothing like a rock ballad. "Long Way Home" clearly has the feel of an anthem with its energetic build-up, however, the gentle "We Belong" is a relaxing track for Sundays after you’ve been dancing all night and features all the qualities of a superb ambient song. As we know from the albums "Movin’ Melodies" (1999), "Two Worlds" and "Dedicated" (2002), this one of André’s strengths.
The 13 tracks on "Addicted To Music" do not only demonstrate ATB’s courage, they consciously show his development as an artist. If you like your ambient and trance to be influenced by a wide range of music, you will love the new album from ATB. Also despite all of the innovation away from the dance floor, André Tanneberger does not forget his origins and has again set milestones in modern club music as on his previous albums. Dance songs with melancholic hooks and wonderful harmonious, smooth and relaxed sounds, in which you can lose yourself. Seventy minutes of emotional rollercoasting - simply ATB.
"I love making tracks sound as different as possible," says André. "After every song, I turn everything to zero and start all over again so there is no risk of sampling myself." André gives the ups and downs of his private life last year as an explanation for the obvious melancholy of the album. "I completed my third US tour, which was, of course, very satisfying. But not only positive things happened." He had to deal with private setbacks - a long-term relationship failed and André also had to come to terms with the loss of a very close friend. "These are all things that I definitely overcame with music. If I was a writer, I would have dealt with all of it in a book. I’m a musician though, therefore some songs certainly have a therapeutic basis."
Nevertheless, ten years after the first successful single with Sequential One, "Dance" (released in February 1993), André Tanneberger has become one of the most respected and established dance musicians and producers. He broke the UK charts in 1999 with the number one hit "9 P.M. (Till I Come)", worked with big artists such as Michael Cretu from Enigma, Heather Nova, Moby and William Orbit, appeared with Bryan Adams at Rock in Rio, remixed tracks for pop legends like A-ha and travelled all over the world to perform as a DJ. There is no doubt that this extraordinary artist as well as his career will continue to develop. André Tanneberger asks himself, "Who knows where I’ll be in ten years time?" One thing is certain, he has moved on and has come closer yet again to what, in his heart, he considers to be complete music.
You can also see ATB for the first time on DVD with "Addicted To Music" from 28 April 2003. In addition to all of the videos (including "9 P.M. (Till I Come)", "Killer", "The Summer") and the brand new single "I Don’t Wanna Stop", there will be a feature on ATB’s US tour, a peek into his studio as well as various specials like making ofs, an interview, discography, pictures, live sets and an ATB quiz.
Furthermore the dance tracks from the new album will be available as limited vinyl pressings.
