The name is Bond, Scott Bond, licensed to DJ, spin records and thrill crowds. But Bond is not just a deadly serious DJ, he is also resident and co-promoter of the world renowned, Sheffield based super-club Gatecrasher and a critically acclaimed music producer.
Scott’s DJing career and life-long dalliance with the disco decks first began back in 1989 in and around Birmingham’s very colorful nightlife. His very first gig was at the legendary Hummingbird club. As Scott recalls, “playing the Hummingbird was a baptism of fire, it was a case of being thrown in at the deep end and just getting on with it. If the crowd didn’t like what you were playing they would throw glass at you, if you were lucky a bottle, they tended to bounce rather than break! I managed to stay there in one piece and figured that if I could deal with this then I could deal with anything.” After Scott’s residency at the Hummingbird, he began to perform at various underground, one-off parties for friends around the city.
Scott quickly made a name for himself and developed a fanatical underground following. It was not long before Karl and Barney, the promoters behind C.R.E.A.M, Birmingham’s decadent all-nighters, began to take notice of Bond's dance floor talents. Karl and Barney confidently gave Bond a residency at their all-night parties which had become world-renowned for their mad-cap antics.
In 1992 Scott met up with Simon Raine, the then manager of a Birmingham club called ‘Bakers’. An ambitious individual, Raine envisioned a new breed of dance club at Bakers with Bond on the decks. Late one night, after many double brandies, Simon and Scott struck a deal, albeit on the back of a beer mat. Scott agreed to become the new resident DJ at Bakers with Simon promoting the new night called “Absolutely Ridiculous”. Little did both Raine and Bond know, five years later, they would both be running one of the biggest super-clubs in the world.
A budding young producer, Scott released his first record “Dap Do Dah” on independent dance label Global Grooves in 1992. It received widespread critical acclaim and showed up on “Club” and “Buzz” charts across the UK. Later that year, Scott set up his own record label, Absolutely Ridiculous Recordings and began recording under the moniker, The Scott Bond Project. TSBP’s “While Your Feet are Stomping” was featured on Fantazia’s very first House Collection LP mixed by Boy George and the follow up, “The Underground”, were strongly supported by none other than the dance godfather himself, Pete Tong.
In 1993, Bond started his own night, “Republica” at Bakers, performing alongside special guests such as Boy George, Tall Paul, Seb Fontaine and Judge Jules.
In August 1994, Scott joined Simon Raine to promote some one-off parties under the name of Gatecrasher. After all, Simon had gained a notorious reputation as a party animal and had “gate crashed” more than a few parties, so the name seemed quite fitting.
Bond and Raine set about promoting their first night at the Archers in Sheffield, a city which Raine had shrewdly picked for its cosmopolitan night life. Sheffield was the birthright of the romantic era in the 80s breeding bands such as The Human League, ABC and Heaven 17. It was right at the heart of industrial Britain where people were not afraid to try something new, be it heterosexual boys wearing make-up or a new club that offered a bit more of a night-out than the local Ritzy. Located under some railway arches, the Gatecrasher club nights became a huge success with all of the top DJs demanding to play. Both Oakenfold and Healy were huge supporters of Gatecrasher. To this day, Scott Bond is the resident at Sheffield’s Gatecrasher.
Currently, Scott Bond is touring North America and performing to sold out crowds from Space in Miami to Giant in Los Angeles. His latest DJ mix, “Experience” on Gatecrasher Music Digital was released on January 21st 2002 and has sold over 125,000 copies in its first week on the shelves. This flawlessly mixed, triple CD includes tracks from Blank & Jones, Human Movement, Sinead O’Connor, John “OO” Fleming, Tiesto, Mauro Picotto, Tall Paul and Arakis, among many others.
