NFB Momentum Democracy Special

A compilation of four 10-minute shorts by new and emerging filmmakers that look at Democracy in Canada from a multicultural perspective. Co-produced with CBC Newsworld and the National Film Board of Canada.

The four 10-minute documentaries featured are:

Citizen Z by Cavan Young - The battleground is Dufferin Grove Park; where local citizens house a popular local puppet theatre, a farmers market and gather to feast on home-cooking, all inside the Zamboni building - where the “famous” ice-cleaning machine rests. All is well in the community, until City of Toronto threatened to evict everybody and reclaim the room solely for the ice re-surfacer.

In Good Forum: A Taxi Cab Driver’s Take On Democracy by Peter Janes -The film profiles a diverse group of cab drivers who defy their stereotype. While navigating their way around the city, Janes captures various drivers’ philosophies on democracy and freedom. Behind the wheel sit the likes of Demetre, who muses on the value of democracy, Kalsang who managed to flee Tibet and cherishes every day in Canada and Mohammed “Mr. Geography” Collins, a man on a mission to educate and bring understanding to the world.

Life Lessons in the Lula Lounge by Kyle Stone - D’telle is a Cuban musical group of eight young women and one man, visiting Canada. By night they perform to packed salsa clubs and by day study English. In this short documentary, the group compares their lives in Communist Cuba to democratic Canada, while sharing a cramped two-storey house and rehearsing around the corner at Toronto’s Lula Lounge.

Soldiers For The Street by Ngardy Conteh - Ras King and his Human Improvement Movement (H.I.M.) comrades live, rap and breath a philosophy - black self-empowerment and political awareness. Through persistence, action and their hip hop raps they preach racial pride, political activism and self-respect to their community and surrounding neighbourhoods. Conteh`s film shows how this grassroots organization is awakening black youth and literally giving a voice to a marginalized community.
