comp. RAM question

i built my computer about 3 years ago
and now its time for a memory upgrade cuz i have to do some video editing

i'm running at Pentium 4 1.7GHZ with 100MHZ FSB with a 17x multiplier (altho Sisoft Sandra tells me its running at 400MHZ 4x100)
i'm not sure exactly what speed of RAM i have in right now. i have 256 MB of SDRAM. i think its PC2700 DDR, but i don't remember.
i have another stick of 256 SDRAM i bought a while back but when i put it in my comp with the current RAM i have, the computer locks up after about 5-10 min of running. on the label for that stick it says its PC2700 and then says 333mhz.
first question is, if both these sticks of RAM are PC2700 at 333mhz, why would they cause my computer to jam when both are in there after running it for 5-10 min? could it be cuz one is Non ECC and the other is? (i don't know if they are ECC or not). could it be because the CAS latencies are different? how can i check this? i was messing around in Sisoft Sandra and i couldn't get too much info.

now i want to buy some more RAM and i want it to work this time. should i buy another stick of PC2700 333mhz RAM and put it in my computer with the PC2700 333mhz stick that i currently don't have in my computer?
also with my CPU what type of RAM do i need?
the CPU i got according to the saved receipt i have says it is
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 1.70GHz, 400MHz FSB, Socket 478 Retail

damn i used to know so much about this stuff.

thanks for any help.

Well your CPU could use RD-RAM, DDR-RAM, or SD-RAM...

If it supports DDR-Ram I'd go with that.

Also with RAM it isn't wise to mix brands and more importantly don't mix speeds. So I would reccomend finding out what type of RAM your cpu supports, than just getting your two sticks of 512MB DDR or something, not too expensive these days anyway. Just try to keep them the same brand and speed you should be fine.

i dont think its possible to run ECC with non ECC, and i doubt you have ECC ram, and if one of the ram has a higher CAS latency both rams will default to the slower (high number) one
i think any system utility can tell you what kind of ram you have

aight i opened up my comp and there was a label on the RAM i had it in there. it is PC2700 DDR SDRAM 333mhz. the exact same as the other stick i have.

i'm guessing it is probably because they are different brands that is causing them to lock up when they are both in there.

i want to get a stick of 512 and also keep on of the 256 sticks in there. will mixing the size of the two sticks cause any stability problems?

Have you tried putting the new stick of memory in by it's self - it may be faulty??

Also, if you have more than two slots i.e. 3 or 4, then the memory modules should ideally be in slots 1 and 2. You probably woun't have ECC ram btw!

it would probably cost about £70 to pick up a 512MB stick.
