Mastering in Reason?

Those of you that use Reason for producing, do you do any "pre-mastering" within Reason, before the real mastering, e.g putting a master EQ or compressor on the track?

Or do you simply connect the mixer to the interface, and export your mix?

If you want to, post your default racks, that would be highly appreciated!

Thx in advance!

I never put any mastereffects on the mix in reason (if I use reason, the moments seems to be fewer and fewer nowdays :))

I work as much as I can to get a good mixdown and then I do the rest in the masteringpart :)

my default rack..hmm, guess that would be:

synths -> mixer -> interface :)

My default rack in reason is to have the interface, create a mixer, create a reverb, then a delay, then start with a synth usually.

I do add an eq to the overall mix and set the Q to 0 and the filter gain to 100 and brighten up slightly the bass and the hi end parts to give the mix more clarity imo

I've used Reason for 2 years and knew every single knob. That was before I started using Cubase. Now I use Cubase only, with lots of VST plugins, it just sounded better then Reason. Lately I got into mastering, I played with eq'ing & compressing tracks seperately. Well, a couple of days ago I opened Reason again after a long time. I created some synths and put equalizers and compressors on each seperatly. It sounded soo much better then I was used to from Reason!

I definitly adjusted my opinion about Reason sounding not good enough compared to other softsynths. You can make some great sounds out of the subtractor, it's all about layering and mastering! It's just how you handle it. I'm more experienced now and I found out that reason is a great program that is still very usefull and exceptionally easy to use...

Well, back to the mastering part...I use a vocoder set to equalize (up to 32 band !!) on each synth. Now and then I use a compressor on some tracks seperatly. And I use a compressor on the master, just to listen how it sounds with compressor. When I export my track, I turn the compressor to 'bypass'. I always compress my tracks in Cubase with a multiband compressor or T-Racks.

Long story, but I hope it helps you guys to make you're Reason tracks sound better from now on...

redroom great post but just to clarify one thing, what you described is not the masteringprocess, it's the mixdown :)

the main reason for mastering is to bring the level as close as possible to 0.0 db without clipping and of course to make up for the lacking frequencies if it's needed :)

Well for me mastering is the process to make the track sound as good as it does. So I see eq'ing and compressing during the design process is also a part of mastering. The compression and limiting afterwards to make you're track louder is just the final stage of mastering.

That's how I see things...no offence :D
Vizay
well it seems like everyone have their own definition of mastering :p

I'm not gonna take that matter any further since it doesn't really matter as long as what you do sounds good :)

if it sounds good it is good, no matter how you did it :D

I don't do mastering of any kind in Reason, I just try to make it sound as good as possible with some EQ and very little compression on separate tracks, then take it all to WaveLab and master with the Waves plugins and iZotope Ozone 2.

Sometimes I use a little compression and EQ before connecting it to the interface. Just to give it an extra boost.

when it comes to compression you just use very very gentle settings right?

John
i add eq to nearly any device. but i dont always use it:)
i only add very little compression. mostly on the kick/bassline and perc. i rarely use it on the synths. i add a very little bit off compression to the final mixer. i do add some eq on the track. mostly to gently boost the high notes. because when i export to wave it always seems to lose some of the high freq's.

but then again. i suck at reason:D (and i only use reason hehe)

@passiva: w00t read on your site glamorize is getting a release, 'def gonna buy that, it's still ing great :)
