Here is the story: one day you have the pleasure of a close, but positive encounter with an alien. The when and where is unimportant, as the encounter turns out to be more than just that in fact: the two of you totally click, you start to hang out and get to know each other, although not in so many words, and you discover that he is actually a pretty cool creature – sort of like the E.T.! You decide to call your cosmic friend “D.J.”. D.J. decides to stay on the Earth for a while. Communication turns out to be a bitch though!
Being the huge EDM fan that you are, you want to share with D.J. your love of trance, so one day you decide to show him what trance music is all about and mentor him through developing an appreciation for it. D.J. can’t really understand any earthly languages, so you obviously can’t discuss your passion with him verbally, and you will need to rely on his aural sense and his emotions. I do realize that one other element in “feeling” electronica is the physical experience, but let’s downplay that here.
The question is: what 3 tunes (since he has a short attention span) would you play for D.J. to get him all excited and (trance-)addicted, considering he is also planning to take them back to his planet to show off to his buddies?! What 3 tracks in your opinion truly, sufficiently, and compellingly define the genre known as trance and universally evoke that euphoric feeling we're all familiar with in all individuals? It is fine if your choice has vocals. Please specify the remix of your selections if applicable. In other words, if you only name the composer and the composition, it is assumed that you are referring to the original version.
I am so excited over this thread! I can’t wait to read your replies! |

Erm, I believe permutations of this thread have been done many times over. However, here's two records I believe had much to do with the shape of trance.
BT - Flaming June
Delerium - Silence (Tiesto ISOS mix) |

Oooh boy... Tristan you sure thought this one out! Really thoughtfully asked. Hahaha "communication turns out to be a bitch"... hahaha. Okay, I have a really hard time narrowing this down, but if I were to do so... I'll name some, maybe less or more than three... here goes:
-I second BT - Flaming June... actually this is coproduced by PvD (the original version too and not just the PvD edit and mix, if I'm not mistaken), so that's TWO heavyweights involved with that. I like it because not only does it have the euphoric driving buildups and big riff action notable in many trance tracks, it goes BEYOND. There are so many subtle layers... I swear there's an acoustic guitar in the mix used to good effect to bring out more emotion. The melody is simple yet complicated (by way of hypnotic effects) at the same time, makes for a good ringtone! -- there's even some acid tweaking going on, but the bottom line IS: it's catchy, it came at a relevant time, and it is MASSIVE and... if BT has any say on this himself as the artist, I hear he sometimes still finishes his DJ sets off with it and it's been like 8 or so years since it first came out ;).
I had to name a vocal track...
-BT - Dreaming. NOT technically or strictly trance, which is part of the appeal. The drums are unusually large and chunky and maybe sound like rock music drums to a degree. This is a combination of breaks and trance but when it's all over and done with, you don't really even care what it's called, because you'll be dancing your @$$ off. This is EDM that works both on a dancefloor and a headphones level. The vocals are stuttered and chopped up in umpteenth ways, but it works on a musical (not just in a technical, show-offy "look what I can do with my computer") capacity, and like Flaming June, adds to the hypnotism and amazing floating feeling of the track. The brief but well-used string arrangement in there are another plus, tying music of human's past to present to future. It has the fundamentals of what makes a good trance track and goes above and beyond that without being so polished that it comes off as not being able to provoke a reaction in the listener... you either really love it or really hate it... this is not a "meh" song for sure.
Otherwise...
-I would not be out of the blue, LOL... naming Ferry Corsten's "Out of the Blue" for the very reason that this spawned SO many copycat imitators (it wasn't totally the first of its kind, granted, but it's certainly one of the most popular and representative in terms of "big riffs in trance anthems"). I would have to name a lot of the big singles (Airwave, ATB, Ayla... A A A hahaha... well so many names) actually because they are the ones that really got tons of people all around the world dancing, so what better way than to give the alien a superclub compilation, like a Ministry of Sound Annual one (I'm not kidding) or equivalent. Popular does not necessarily equate fine art, but it definitely means someone was shaking their bon-bons to this night after night! Which is ultimately more important to me......
It's a tough call. Depends on whether the alien wants more uplifting trance or more moody prog! Haha... is the E.T. a trance snob?
KIDDING :D! |

I certainly guessed so, and that's why I repeatedly searched the forum using different keywords, but could not find a similar thread. However, I went only as far back as 9 months. I thought that even if this has been discussed before, it would be a good idea to revive it to hear from all the new members, not to mention that it would be very interesting to see if TA's will name any of the more recent tunes. |

| Shamez214 |
Gouryella - Gouryella
Veracocha - Carte Blanche
Ferry Corsten - Out of the Blue
ie: Ferry Corsten is the best thing to ever happen to trance |
|
|
| bundantoh |
this is hard.
energy 52 - cafe del mar (three n one remix)
art of trance - madagascar (ferry corsten remix)
gouryella - ligaya
here are some songs i wanted to put on, but decided not to:
nu-nrg - dreamland
paul van dyk vs. tilt - rendezvous (quadraphonic remix)
dumonde - tomorrow
sasha - xpander
bedrock - heaven scent
binary finary - 1998 |
|
|
| fLipp |
| Sasha - Xpander 10 times over |
|
|
| aspergian |
But if you're going to name Xpander (which is definitely seminal), what about:
Spooky - Little Bullet (Part 1)
(i like connections) |
|
|
| Matt Jay |
Xpander
Carte Blanche
Surburban Train |
|
|
| Shook1 |
Sasha - Xpander (I can agree!)
PvD - For an Angel
Solarstone - 7 Cities |
|
|
| Cobalt |
That's impossible. There are more than three genres of trance; you wouldn't hit them all.
... though Xpander would be a good place to start. |

I'm going to have to pick a song that...ever since the first time I heard it I was floored. The thing about this song is that it just screams emotion to me...i feel everything about it... and as it progresses it just keeps on getting more and more powerful within its mellow mood of things, regardless of which, this song is the shiznit.
Chicane- Saltwater (thrillseekers mix)
Secondly, the songs that seems to connect in various ways with me are always a solid vocal track. Since we're talking about an alien life form, i would definitely want him to understand how trance can be meaningful, not only to us as humans, but to him as an alien life form.....and not to sound lame but the idea of a "singing satellite" is definitely cool. No doubt it's being played out right now, but the idea of a technological invention made by humans exemplifying an action of feeling, expression, and meaning transfer just intrigues me to see what this alien, DJ, would interpret from it...so yeah
Oceanlab- Satellite (Above and Beyond remix)
And finally, I'm going to have to pick Dj Sammy- Heaven for obvious reasons.
SIKE! That'd be absurd lol
On a sidenote..One song i wish i could put on there just to show DJ would be:
George Acosta- Dj's on X
I just love the way the whole thing flows.
But anywayz- Im just going to keep my pick at 2 right now.....im havin fun with this. Ill save my last choice for later. |
