Simple questions about Buzz

Hey guys,

I've been taking time to learn Buzz and so far I'm getting the hang of the basics... setting up machines, adjusting parameters (this is purely experimental for me), sequencing tracks together, and recording. I'm having a blast learning all this stuff, but I've noticed there are TONS of different "machines" in the synth/effect/bass categories, and I was wondering which are your favorites. The few that I played with seemed a bit "cheesy" and "video game-ish."

So any suggestions on the "buzz machines" before I drop money on expensive VSTi's? Thanks! I'm also very new to producing, and maybe a few pointers as to the best sounding effects, I have no idea which are the most widely used or the ones that are most effective. It's pure experimentation at this point. Thanks for the help.

You'd be amazed at what a decently promgrammed synth coupled with some eq and some effects can sound like. Alone, the synths in buzz aren't known for being the best out there, but in the right hands they can be very powerful. James Holden made Horizons entirely in Buzz.

The VoidSynth/VoidLead and Infector are both pretty good synths, and with tweaking you can get some good sounds out of them. You'll need to add chorus, reverb, delay to them to make them sound phat, but that goes without saying since they don't come with their own effects.

There are a few others that are pretty good too, but these are the only ones I used enough to really get quality sounds out of.

Thanks for the replies... another noob question, where can I get that very atmospheric type synths, like the ones in Southern Sun, or Sunset at Myvatn, the ones that really give the track a "big" and "wide" feel? Does Buzz have them? Or how are they made? With different effects?

I have big trouble believing that :o

Email Holden yourself if you don't believe it, hehe. He did the ed up reverse vocal from Nothing with Buzz as well (and external processing).

Agressor 303, Rout 808 and 909 (have to hunt the 909 down, Roland got pissy with Rout), the TB4004 is a good "trancey" synth after adding delay, reverb, and chorus.

I got this really cool, thick, heavy acid bass sound, I'll post what I used tonight when I get home. I remember using the TB4004 on it, but not the order of the effects. I used the Raverb on the left, Phatman chorus on the right, Arguilles Gain (KGain or something)

I'm trying to find all the Machines that are greyed out :( Feel like I might be missing something.

and about Holden...

From his site:

"the revelation that they were all made using merely a PC and freeware music production software which anyone can download (legally!) from the internet sent waves across the old skool production industry and went a long way towards opening doors for a whole new generation of young producers to follow him"

In the links section, he has a link to BuzzMachines.com and says:
"my favourite music software"

I have been trying to see what the software can do by itself, and haven't tried any hardware synths yet. I believe I remember seeing something for implimenting MIDI, though, so I believe it can run hardware. I'm relatively new to Buzz, but it has reignited my interest in software :)

Hey man, thanks for the advice. It's actually really fun and interesting to try out all the machines, change the parameters, etc etc. Also, how do you go about "finding" the greyed out machines? The 909 is greyed out on mine too, but an earlier installation of Buzz did in fact HAVE the 909 available to use. Why are machines greyed out now?

Supposedly Roland did not like how rout got the 909 sounds for his Machine. But there are ways to get it :D

You have a PM :)

and about the acid bass thing. It's actually a Startup Tip, lol. It was a tb4004 into a saturator, high-pass filter on saturator, tweak resonance, into a Gain to bing it back up/add some edge/bite to it. Try it with other generators to see what you get. I added the raverb and Phatman chrous to make it sound big and fat, and went to town. I love Buzz :D

Yep, though I have no hardware so haven't tried myself.
