I mean do you like listening to edm because it has this wicked awesome sound/vibe/groove, do you listen to it cause it evokes (sp?) emotions in you...
For me it's a combination of both, it's obvious that it has to sound good, but the music makes me feel nice, especially tracks with magical vocals, but ever tracks without vocals, it's like they're trying to tell you something, there are tracks that manage to give me goosebumps, and make my spine shiver  scary in a way, it's amazing how some people can put so many emotions into a single track. |

edm is electronic dance music
i like it because i feel it is a happy music, puts a smile on my face and makes my want to dance. combine that with lighting/visuals in a banging club atmosphere and i feel at home. although i listen to it alot on my stereo, computer in the car nothing beats the atmosphere in a club |

| suppose it brings out your emotions. i dunno i like how most dun have to rely on lyrics to give you different sorts of feeling like other music. even most vocal trakcs dun have a very very dominant vocals. say when you listen to the same track at different times, it gives you different kinds of feelings. pretty much, you feelings, personality and emotions define what a track means to you. one could find a track upsetting while another could find it mood lifting. dun think anyone get what im trying to say but.... yeh |

For me an EDM song can have a certain meaning at one given moment, and then a completely other meaning in another moment.
I just got tired of songs pushing meaning on me....lyrics and all that e. Sad songs meant to be sad, happy songs meant to be happy.
I think that if there is something I like in EDM it's the versatility.
I have this away message on AIM...it goes like tihs:
Javi on trance: "I don't like music that pushes meaning, like forces me to feel happy or sad. Lyrics- they push what the artist wants you to understand. I like MUSIC. I like the beats, the sounds, the art of composing and when I hear a trance or electronic song I can get whatever I want to from it. I think about whatever I want. I'm not forced to be sad by sad lyrics. It's the versatility I like. It doesn't matter how the sound comes to be (guitar, drums and the like), what matters is what the sound is projecting and how the sound makes me feel. How the rise of a song can create massive emotion- without words, without a band, just one guy spinning and mixing. Now that is an art!"
lame, but whateva ;) |

I don't get fussy with terms, sometimes I say EDM, sometimes I say electronica, sometimes I say techno (face it, this music is TECHNOlogically-created and has its roots in the techno-pop of the "old ones" a la Kraftwerk and YMO et al.)... but the word choice sometimes doesn't matter so much for me as the expanding community which encompasses so many subgenres... there's electronic music that can't really be danced to either, so EM? haha.
For me, it's e-music that can make you think and feel -- many of my fave tracks are those you can chill out and listen to and really appreciate, but that work on the dancefloor as well. I definitely agree with the versatility, that's for sure. I'm not an exclusive "OR" type of person, I can relate to the "AND" set more. That's why it's kinda hypocritical to say that electronic music can't head in certain directions, when it's all about evolution and expansion of the sound as the family tree grows. I may not agree with some of those directions, but I respect them for what I are and smile when people are, perhaps most importantly, having fun with the music. :D |
