Trance vs. Tech-Trance ... Difference ??

We really shouldnt dwell on the differences between subgenres, since most of the electronic music out there meshes all types of styles now...but for the sake of discussion I would say that: tech-trance is edgier, harder, and not based on a melodic loop...this usually done by using more inconstant basslines and snares...I also think that tech-trance in general probably has a higher BPM count than a typical "progressive trance" tune...
But then again, its all really arbitrary...
Compare productions by Filterheadz with productions by Ferry Corsten, and you'll here the difference.;) |

| Im going througha change in my trance im branchin out from trancey floaty uplifting trance to tech trance, and i love it, im so glad i found it the noises and sounds are amazing and different, electric and bouncy, its wicked if you can find a track that combines both tech and floaty trance the whole way through. Marco v is good at returning to the Fluffyness on a breakdown but not all the way through, ferry corsten and sumtimes if you listen hard youcan hear above n beyonds background is techy sounding. |

That's pretty much correct. The real foundation of tech-trance is the harsher percussion and wider bass than usual trance. Here are a few examples:

Compare that stuff with the trance you typically hear. They're clearly not the same genre. But none of the above are techno productions either (except maybe Subraumstimulation and New Time New Place, but even so, they can't be labeled just "techno"). |

thats what i would say....i dont see the nead to narrow down this song to this genre and this other song to this other genre. the way things are going every song is gonna end up with its own personal little genres |

| subgenres are a great tool to describe what a track sound like without going like "it has this bit which goes derderder then i nthe breakdown its like nininininininininin" |

Subgenres can be useful. But use them as general labels and let the music continue to roam free -- when stuff gets boxed in and people adopt elitist, snobbish, hateful attitudes (yes, it does get that ridiculous)... that's when it's not exactly so useful anymore.
