His is a split personality taken to the extreme: As a DJ, he's a master of blistering techno; as a performer, he's renowned for his avant-garde brand of live electronic music. Sometimes he goes by his given name; other times he surfaces as "The Plastikman," an enigmatic persona as twisted and mysterious as his music.
He may be a bit of an eccentric, but it's his unpredictability and forward-thinking approach to music that have allowed Richie Hawtin to maintain a career on the decks for over a decade. Never one to compromise, Hawtin recently made the announcement that he would be taking a hiatus from the DJ booth in order to spend more time in pursuit of live performance.
Prepping for the first Plastikman stage show in over a decade at Montreal's Mutek Festival on June 3, Richie Hawtin sits down for a rare interview explaining the reasoning behind this latest turn in his career, the anything-but-ordinary exploration of sound on his new CD Closer, and the forces that drive one of the most puzzling personalities in dance music today.
Log on. Tune in. Listen up. On Wednesday, March 31, at 9pm Richie Hawtin joins THE REVOLUTION.
