Decide for me

I need a moderately cheap synth for trance
but i'm having a bit trouble deciding what synth to buy. I've been considering the following:

Novation A-Station
-"- K-STation
Micro Korg
Access Virus rack

Which one has the best performance/features etc? Also if you have other suggestions for similar synths, please let me know.

Well, I don't own any of the synths you listed, but I'm pretty sure I know what everyone is gonna say - take the Virus rack.
It will sound superb, had 8 parts multi-tim and will do everything from basses to pads and leads.

Don't get the K-Station. You'll will be greatly disappointed. IMO, it is one of the worst bang-for-buck decisions a person can make. It's only one part multitimbral and there is a software version of it that sounds just as good or almost as good.

I would not recommend buying a Virus rack, the laptop is infinitely better. But, if you don't have a lot of money, go for the Virus and maybe one day you can sell it and upgrade to the laptop.

Is the sound quality better on the laptop versions? I thought the only difference was polyphony & multi-timbrality.

The Virus Rack XL is the same as the Desktop and the KC in features, but the Virus Rack has reduced polyphony, less outs, less available effects and I think less oscillators.

Personally, for trance production where tweaking your own sounds is important, I would not recommend the rack version, it has like two dieals and a few buttons. It would be fine if you plan on working with presets but will really limit you if you plan to fully explore what the synth has to offer.

Obviously have a look around 2nd hand if you haven't already to try and save some $

Exactly. The Virus is an extremely complex subtractive virtual analog. Many people who buy it end up being intimidated and return it ( ;) ). So, unless you're a synthesis wizard, you're going to have to rely on lots and lots of knob turning and praying to get interesting sounds. With the rack, you won't be able to do this in the same way.
Design
Desktop Virus
Psy-T
go for a waldorf q rack
trancenrg69
Virus b or c
Nordlead 3
Waldorf Q
Supernova 2
jp 8080
Alesis Andromeda

All great synths, if you can't decide go with the Virus. If you can afford two add a Nordlead3 or a jp8080.

Being biased, as many of you know, Virus C is the best synth for the money, period. I would not consider it "cheap" as a used version sells anywhere from $1000 to $1300 on ebay. Don't get virus B - if you're that desparate, for $600 or so, get Supernova II rack. Also, I love my $270 Yamaha AN1X - best hardware synth for the money.

Let us know what u got.:toothless

I know most of the differences between the B and the C, but why are the minor improvements of the C worth the few extra hundreds?

thanks,
