Typically you'll want to make heavy use of chords to give it a fatter, lusher sound. As for Vanguard, I've found it seems to be better for leads than for pads...but then again I haven't really played around with it enough.

Tiesto, Armin and Ferry uses Hardware synth`s that may give you a thought.. anyways the bright string in Pro 53 are very good..

Doesnt really matter, does it?

The bottem line is if you want equipment that brings you up to their level, you will need to put the money forth. Some softsynths can achieve a very nice sound, but you need to know how to program and tweak them. Its also important to EQ and compress your track properly, add the right levels of reverb and delay. And basically to make all that sound right together and for each element to compliment the others, you need..... practise.... so keep at it, and dont worry about what other people use until your skills are there. Simple.
hey cheggy
Well the answer you want to hear is the Roland JP-8080. The answer you should read is learn some music theory basics if you're struggling with chords and as mentioned before, it takes a lot of practise in getting the right sound. The right tool will help but its not the total answer.
