so if i mix a set with my amateur equipment and record it and then upload it for a few friends to listen and maybe posting it here, would that be illegal or is it fairly safe?

OF COURSE IT IS LEGAL!
why wouldn't it be? it is your own artistic creation and you own the copyright, thus you can distribute it in any way you wish. if you think it's good i'd love to hear it. |

| If they aren't your own productions and you don't have the producer's permission, then it's illegal. |

Just a thought:
Because the tracks that s/he is using to make the mix (likely) aren't all his/her intellectual property ... |

As I said before, unless they have permission from whoever owns the rights (usually done in the form of paying dues to a group that later redistributes the money back to the owner of the copyright), yes it's illegal. |

Probably ....
But I don't care, upload you're set (since it seems like you mixed one,) I'll give it a listen ... |

| almost NO artist will care... as long as you aren't profiting from it. you ask anyone, upload a mix, no one will care... just don't sell it. |

| dude, its like self promotion for every artist... i'm not sure i understand, its not like anyone is going to steal a track off ur set. for one its not the full version and second no one will be able to do anything contructive with it... whats the point? |

| essentially i would'nt see any artist having a problem with it cause it's a form of promotion for the said artist - sure it would be a different matter if the tracks were distributed as full versions (and not part of a mix). Cause its a mix I guess it would be less of an issue - sure following the letters of copyright the recordings should not be played to an audience without first seeking permission but how many thousands of dj's do this each week before playing a set??? |
