[REVIEW] : Josh Gabriel & Dave Dresden @ Avalon 3-27-04

What a SPECTACULAR night. Josh & Dave totally tore up Avalon!! There were SOOO many freaking Columbia kids at this party. I kept thinking I was in the library.... jk/jk

So Christina and I got there before 12, slightly intoxicated; but not overly so. The opening DJ was laying down some yummy progressive beats. I remember dancing by the upstairs bar to Matthew Dekay Band - Higher Thoughts (Original Mix). Christina and I were standing on the blacony when the opening DJ dropped Everything But The Girl - Five Fathoms (some crazy mix) <--- totally OLD SCHOOL :eyespop: That brought me back to the Rojan Club Shanghi China with Oakenfold's Essential Mix World tour. The DJ saw me flipping out and gave me a nod, we know what's up!

Ok so the met up with Surge and DJYaNiK. We chilled behind the DJ booth, until who showed up!?! That's right! Josh & Dave in the flesh. Snapped some pictures of them then headed down onto the main dance floor. For once it wasn't a complete mob scene, unlike at Carl Cox. There was ample space to ebb and flow to the sultry sounds of G&D.

Ok OK the important part!! What did they play? A lot of stuff I didn't know, and I lot of stuff that was BRAND NEW! Big thanks to Surge & DJYaNiK for helping compile the Track list:

Duncan Sheik - On A High (Gabriel & Dresden unknown mix) <--- yes yes yes we went Nucking Futs, although they didn't play the mix that I really like.
Ferry Corsten - Kyoto (Original Mix or G&D bootleg)
Rowan Blades & Chris Lake - Untitled (From the Sasha Liquid room mix)
Josh Gabriel - Alive (Techno mix) This is one is his Essential Mix, which I have; but I haven't had time to listen to it :(
4 Strings - Into The Night (Gabriel & Dresden 6 Deep Dub)
Annie Lenox - A Thousand Beautiful Things (Gabriel & Dresden Tech Funk Mix)
Above & Beyond - No-one On Earth (Gabriel & Dresden Remix) On A State of Trance 140 BRAND NEW!!! OMFG <--this song ROCKS~!
Andain - Beautiful Things (Gabriel & Dresden's Unplugged Mix crazy vocal mix that was HOT)
Paul Van Dyk Crush PVD Mix (Meh)
Sarah McLachlan - Fallen (Gabriel & Dresden Anti-Gravity Mix) Nice to hear a mellow song here and there
Solid Globe - Sahara :eyespop: :eyespop:  <--- that was me when this dropped ;)
Evanescence - Hello (Tri-Factor vs. Gabriel & Dresden Mix)
Holden and Thompson - Nothing (93 Returning Mix Looped some CRAZY G&D way ;-))

There were others but I can't understand what I was saying on the recording LOL. Anyway it was such a nice blend of Prog & Trance. I couldn't have been happier. Oh ya met a new TA who's name is Billy. I forget his handle. Post in this thread if you read this.

In Avalon news:
(+) The sound system is back to the way it was for New Years Eve. I had very little issue with my hearing after leaving and was completely recovered by this morning. A-girl my ears thank you!
(-) Avalon is now being bitchy not allowing Glow Sticks in the club. Photons should be easy enough to sneak by though..
(-) As summer approaches I hope they do something about temp. management. It was a BOILER in there last night.

Pictures will be posted soon at www.columbia.edu/~jtr2005

Until the next party~!

Take care & *never stop dancing*

good night...wasn't planning on going but me and some friends really wanted to hit up a club and so we decided to go...got really trashed :D

i almost died when they played PQM - Nameless :disbelief
not sure what remix...maybe Chab Mix 2 ?
DJYaNiK
It was nice meeting you and Christina, Jon.

Gabriel and Dresden also dropped:

Motorcycle - Deep Breathe Love :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyespop: :eyespop: :eyespop: :eyespop:

Josh Gabriel - Alive (New Techno Remix) :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyespop: :eyespop: :eyespop: :eyespop:

The first time I've ever heard the full version of Deep Breathe Love... and it was IMMENSE, in my opinion. Then hearing Alive - OMFG! (NOTE: Alive is a different remix than on the Essential Mix. They scrapped the original :()

They did an alright job at scratching... Pretty cool, actually.

The On a High thing that you mentioned was actually a mix of two songs: The On a High Accapela mixed with The Wheel.

Anyways, last night was wild.
YaleTrance
eeeh, they were alright. but what can i say, i left and went to Howells around 430 and everything at Arc was so much better that I forgot most of the Avalon part of the night.

Deep Breathe Love was pretty cool. It was nice to hear Into the Night in a club again after all these years. Sahara and Crush seemed kinda out of place. The mixing was shady here and there but decent considering they were doing so much with the laptop.

Trance@CU--remixes and acapella versions over tracks are not the same thing. ;)
DJYaNiK
Almost forgot to mention that I started going wild when the opening DJ dropped Bjork - Pagan Poetry (Infusion Remix).
detective you
Last time I saw them.....well.....him, cause only Josh Gabriel could make it to the event (the other one is an ass), he was completely drunk and mixed like my grandmother....oh yeah...i forgot...no vinyls...WTF...it was boring only seeing the top of his head behind his cpu..anyway...

it was a wonderful night. gabby and dressy did an awesome set! i particularly loved the moment when they played Above and Beyond- No One On Earth ( g & d remix)!!!! jon is right, the sound is soo much better than before...my ears are not ringing

it was always a pleasure hanging out with jane dollface! we were shaking it like a polaroid picture last night hehe ;) :haha: also mr. ian himself :p , saw serge...sorry i didn't get to hang out with you, you were on your way to howells. :( saw arny (choobak) hehe hows my mixing drink skills hun? ;)

i went with two of my friends jess and julie...they had an awesome time too....the music was just sooo amazing! the crowd could have been better , but oh well...

one complaint of the night...when we were outside trying to get the guestlist girl's attention, some wit that works the line was soo utterly rude to me. :whip: some tall dark skinned guy that needs some manners 411 lessons...soooooooo rude...

anyways, it was a great night... :eyespop: :wtf: :D i loved the fact that my girlies and i were literally crawling back to the parking garage after the party ...lol we couldn't walk coz our feet were totally killing us!!!! :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: that walk seemed sooooooooo long even though it was only a couple doors from avalon...hahaha i was on the sidewalk rolling laughing my arse off :haha: :haha: :haha:

hehe

Yea, a great night. I was a little disappointed not see them mix vinyls but having in mind they are for the most part producers, I can see why they would be more comfortable with the Powerbook and CDs. I don't think it took away from the quality of their set tho.

I was scared about my ears from what I have been reading about the sound system in previous weeks, but it seems it's now ok. If they would turn down the treble a little bit more and it would be perfect.

At the end Dave Dresden dropped
Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes [Sweeping Strings Mix] (no surprise:)
Three Drives - Carrea 2 [G&D Turbo Remix]

A few tracks after Solid Globe, they also dropped
Peter Martin - Perfect Wave

And somewhere at the beginning Dave Dresden dropped
PQM - Nameless [?Chab 2? Remix]

I also remember hearing Southern Sun, Mindcircus, and Beautiful Things, but some unknown mixes, or could have just been the acapellas.

Jon that was me that you met last night. Very cool to finally meet some TA's. I know a few CP ppl but only the ones that really know what they are talking about when it comes to music.

Need to meet somemore of you TA's to hang with.

In case you missed this party, or have the overwhelming urge to hear "As the rush comes" just one more time (!), "Motorcycle" is going to be performing at Webster Hall this Saturday. Check out the site for yourself. It doesn't sound like it's going to be a full-blown set though.
