Question for Experts: The Techno-vs.-Trance Divergence?

What we call "trance," all other people around the world call "techno." So the term "trance" is probably a new one, whereas I can remember the word "techno" growing up in the 80's when I was a boy.

So how did trance come into existence, and did it always have this break-and-build with synths? Was it always around 140 bpm? And did "techno" always describe the style that it does now?

Finally: do people in your area know what kind of music "trance" is? Because only a year ago I would have thought that "trance" is very slow music.

well, just about everyone in my town calls trance ''techno''....i tell them it's not techno, there's a difference, like the emotions, the sound, etc.....but they just say ''they're the same thing'' and then go listen to their rap or their Nsync cd's :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip:

There was an old thread about this. Search for the 'history of trance' or something like that. Techno + House started first in the 80s, and around the late 80s, early 90s some rave started the first trance-type tracks like Orbital - Halcyon + On + On, and 808 State - Pacific, etc... for what I know a trance scene began in Germany with Sven Vath and simultaneously came Goa Trance, which was big in the early 90s... it grew from there. Search for the thread for more...

Oh, and most people don't know what trance is in my area. If they do, usually they think its what 'electronic' or 'techno' (aka generic term is). A rare few know trance as Oakenfold, and a handful of people actually know what it is...

Yeah JayD, i hear that a lot here too.... when someone hears me blasting techno (or trance), they say "is that RAVE music??? Are you on ecstacy???" heheh, lol....

techno obviously came first, i think trance was an evolution, a progression.... basically softer techno with a melody. Yes, there is a difference between techno and trance...... look at Mauro Picotto and PvD....... there ya go.

I personally LOVE the techno tip, but trance is still up there!

Unconscious people call all the electronic music techno.

but it's easy to decide, I think.

for example: what PvD plays is trance, what Sven Väth is techno.
