It came as a surprise to me after over 20 years of seeing "normal" world maps to come across an upside down one. The most surprising thing was that I found it surprising. It is completely artificial that we have North at the top of a map.

Is it? I would make sense to me that North was chosen as up becuse of the direction that the Earth rotates. If you apply the right hand rule to the rotation, the resulting vector would be pointing to the North pole. Of course I have no evidence that this is the way it is. North was chosen as up probably way before the right hand rule was invented.
I'm just saying that maybe it wasn't necessarily arbitrarily picked. |
