CNE Automotive Building Event - June 26, 2004 (pg. 2)

Hey.

I'm the TA that Mark T mentioned was part of the organizing committee.

First off, I totally apologize that trance isn't on the card (yet... we are trying to secure a second DJ that may make some people happier). I'm a massive trance addict and so is another member of the committee... we'll see what we can do.

This is the first year for Pride Ball Toronto, and the first time that the big Saturday night event has been a fundraiser. Previous Unity Parties were for-profit with none of that money going to Pride Toronto.

We consider this a "transition year" and wanted to make sure that the people who knew and loved Unity-style events would enjoy it, while at the same time rounding out the event so that other styles of music and other types of people will enjoy it too.

Barry Harris is one of the world's biggest remixers (Madonna, Whitney, et al), and was voted the number one circuit (tribal) DJ by Circuit Noise. he is extremely well known and respected by the Gay community, and used to DJ in one of Toronto's best known Gay bars before his Thunderpuss days. All this made him seem like a good choice for year one.

We're booking some big acts too. Eight time Grammy award winner Chaka Khan is doing a massive midnight show, a younger hipper act is being booked to do a second very large show at 3:00 am (almost have the contract signed.)

The production will be massive. We currently have over $100,000 budgeted for production and decor, so the event will be a totally immersive experience, with cool effects and theme.

As far as the Rave Law goes. We have to abide by them like everyone else. Raves are not "banned" at the CNE they are just regulated. You need to meet with police, fire, and other city departments and make them comfortable that your event meets the regulations. That means hiring tons of off-duty police officers (which Unity also had to do in previous years) having an ambulance and medical staff on-site, etc. Anyone, gay or straight can hold an event like ours at the CNE. We do have a great relationship with the city and police though, and that always helps.

Pride Toronto attracts over a million people a year and WE HAVE NEVER HAD AN ARREST ON OUR SITE. The police are baffled by this, but everyone comes to our event to have a good time, chill and party. The losers who cause problems seem to stay home. MarkT is right that gay events are pretty mellow. For example, I've never seen a fight at a gay event or bar. Everything is more relaxed.

Anyways, that's the official scoop. Hope you can all make it.

Next year,

the rave community from what I can tell (and i don't know much) lacks organization and funding.. pure and simple. Most promoters are still burgeoning, there's no way they'd be able to afford 100G just for decorations.. anybody wanna re-finance there condo?

Kudos for this, pride is great for community and for economics.. and even more kudos for being so organized. I wish the normal rave community would learn.

Which is why I love partying in the gay scene.

Your post is bringing back the fond memories of the unity I did go to - 2002, I think. Amazing night.

Props to you chris and all of the endless committees who put together the week's activities - it is one of my favorite times during the year. Can't wait for Pride 2004!!

Hey SamHouse:

Unity is no more. The group that was Unity disbanded and Daniel Bellavance (former owner of Industry, current owner of 5ive plus one of the country's largest party organizers) is introducing a new weekend called PRISM.

Ignition - Thursday - Joe Gauthereaux
Bootcamp - Friday - DJ Abel
Aqua - Saturday Afternoon - Susan Morabito
Pride Ball Toronto - Saturday Night - Barry Harris + ?

and yes,

Revival - Sunday Night - Peter Rauhaufer

You can check out the details at www.prismtoronto.com
