i read it and it freaked me out . . .

"Civilization as we know it is coming to an end soon. This is not the wacky conclusion of a religious cult, but rather the result of diligent analysis sourced by hard data and the scientists who study global “Peak Oil” and related geo-political events"

I'm describing the most likely scenario. The worst case scenario is extinction, as the wars that will accompany the worldwide oil shortage will likely be the most horrific and widespread that humanity has ever experienced.

i found it shocking that it says almost every alternative energy source has a demand for oil. I'm still hoping for hydrogen fuel cells.

This has already been done in the chillout room:

And debunked in the political forum:

kthx. Stupid Doomsday theorists.

hydrogen fuel cells will around pretty soon.

in about 10 - 15 years, there will be mass production of fuel cell cars which will soon after replace petrol/etc cars.

in about 30 - 40 years most peoples houses will be running on fuel cells...and youll be able to share/buy/etc energy from other peoples houses...the power grids will turn into a power line internet.

:)

im not sure if i read it correctly, but 2 years before we have a crash in oil supplies? whether thats what it said or not we have at least 25 to 30 years of known and unknown oil reserves left in the world not to mention a couple years in the united states emergency oil stockpile. although its true that the one fuel were most dependent on is the one one that will run out the soonest i doubt that civilization as we know it will just collapse. whenever there has been a need for new technology research and invention goes into turbo mode, just like in WWII. im sure youve heard of necessity is the mother of all invention or something like that. when the governments realize that we cant postpone this issue no longer, the money will be poured into research and development. theyre just milking the oil ride for as long as they can.

Well this has cheered me up no end, thanks! :D

Those wind turbines are the way to go...build some bloody gigantic rigs of those in the oceans and they'd generate loads of electricity.

not so sure about the "pretty soon" part. there was a really good article in the los angeles times just this last sunday as to why its so much more costly in every way to use hydrogen right now than it is to use conventional fuels. fossil fuels are still the primary means thru which hydrogen is ultimately produced, and there are other factors like low range of hydrogen cars and a host of other technological hurdles that they still haven't overcome. so it's gonna be a while before hydrogen is truly a viable option. maybe in about 20-30 years.

Before this thread explodes because nobody wants to read what's already been posted on the subject, let's settle this in a very simple way.

This "crisis" ignores the most basic principles of macro-economics. Supply, demand, and cost are all inter-related. Fossil fuels are currently in high supply and therefore are cheap. Because they are cheap, they are also in high demand.

The supply of fossil fuel will not "crash." As the supply of fossil fuel begins to dwindle, its cost will go up. This increase in cost will lower the demand for fossil fuel and at the same time make currently expensive alternative energy technologies more competitive in terms of cost.

In the future, as the increasing cost of fossil fuel approaches the "high" cost of alternative energy sources, manufacturers and consumers will begin to turn to those alternatives, and the production of those alternatives will have to be stepped up to keep up with new demand. This increases the supply of those alternatives, lowering the effective cost, and in a matter of time they will have replaced oil and fossil fuel as the primary sources of energy.

Crisis averted. All thanks to high-school level economics.

Capitalism is wonderful, isn't it?

Not to mention the cost and bloody tax raises well have to go through...
